Posted by FYBklyn1959 on Sat Jul 21 11:24:13 2007 (Danville is a city about 30-35 east of Champaign-Urabana)For those who don't know, Champaign and Urbana, Illinois is the home of the University of Illinois. Located in east central Illinois, about 125 miles south of Chicago via I-57. The two cities and the surrounding community have a population of over 100,000 and still growing every year. I lived out there in the early 70s, when my mother was a graduate student at U of I. I have been back for several visits, including June of last year. The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) is considered one of the best small transit agencies in the country, and won the APTA award for best small system (< 100 buses) in 1986 and 1994. Some pics follow: New Flyer D40LFs 0320 and 0327 southbound on Wright St at Green St in the heart of campus. Wright St is also the border between Champaign (on the right side of the pic) and Urbana. 0319 eastbound on Green St, east of Wright. Green and Wright is one of several MTD hubs, others being downtown Urbana and the Illinois Terminal, located in downtown Champaign, which serves as an MTD, Greyhound and Amtrak station. 2 views of New Flyer D60LF 0105 on Green St. 0112 northbound on Wright St. This appears to be one of the newest buses in the MDT fleet (I saw 2 of these, 0556 and 0557). It's an Eldorado National product, can anyone identify the model? MTD has this new program called StopWatch, which has these boards posted at various hubs, which gives the time of arrival of the next buses. Very handy. Later on, I'll post some general pics of the C/U area on OTChat. More info on MTD's StopWatch MTD main page |
