What year are the Gillig Phantoms? Those must have been some of the first Gillig Phantoms ever produced.

I'm not sure. They looked pretty new at the time, so the might have been from 1982 or '83.

Great pics! All of the models in the first pic were still in service during my first visit to the SF Bay Area in August 1988. I remember seeing them parked on the ramps of the Transbay Terminal in downtown SF. AC Transit had a pretty varied fleet in the late 80s: Flxible and GM New Looks, M-A-N artics, Gillig Phantoms, Flyer D901s (?), even Neoplan AN440As!

Whoever spec'd those MAN artics had to be on something. I know that AC Transit has never had an need for air conditioning, but tossing unopenable windows into the mix must have made them hell to ride on warm days, even moreso when the Bay Area had heat waves. I can only shudder to think how bad it was on the ill-fated RTS's AC Transit had that were gone after only a year.

Is it me, or did the Bay Area generally have VERY bad luck with ADB models. Between AC Transit's RTS's and Muni's Grumman 870's, plus the tax benefits California offered to Flyer and Gillig, it made for a much different bus scene then vs. the east coast (and even LA for that matter).

I agree w/ your ADB assessment concerning the Bay Area (though Santa Clara VTA (or whatever they were called back then) had a large number of Grumman 870s (and still has a few Metros)), but the LA-area agencies were pretty much into the ADBs, with the exception of Santa Monica, who after getting burned by Grumman, went back to basics by buying first Fishbowls from GMDD of Canada, and later the Fishbowl sucessor, the MCI Classic.
