[PHOTOS] MSBA Oddities |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Wed Sep 28 07:31:38 2022 ![]() Photo #2 - Photographed by the late Gary Grahl at Roosevelt Field is this Baltimore MTA assigned to the N-45. Was this a test of the new Flixble's that MSBA would buy ? I also heard that this type of bus was an advanced design body lowered onto a Flxible new look chassis. Is this true ? (June 23, 1984) ![]() Photo #3 - Queens Transit loaner for the same reason as photo #2 ? - Uniondale depot June 1984) ![]() Photo #4 - EX-1000 was once a full length fishbowl shortened for light usage lines with narrow streets as I was told. I heard it performed poorly in inclement weather being "all over the road". Anyone know the original number ? (Lynbrook LIRR - N 14 route) ![]() |

I can’t help any of them but that fishbowl in the last photo is utterly absurd. It would have been cheaper to purchase smaller vehicles that would last longer yet handle better in bad weather. But the finished product looks professional and convincing. Bill Newkirk |

Photo 1: I'm going to guess that is the Detroit Diesel/Allison shop on rt 17 in Lodi.Photo 2: This was a Flxible ABR (Advance Bus Remanufacturing) where they indeed would put the 870/Metro body on a Flxible or GMC New Look chassis. NJ Transit also had one made from one of their 1976 Flx New Looks. Easiest way to tell an ABR from a Metro was the extra panel between the headlights and the bumper. |

Photo 1: I'm going to guess that is the Detroit Diesel/Allison shop on rt 17 in Lodi.It wasn't anywhere near Rte 17. More like around the Rte 1 & 9 Area. Photo: 2 - Easiest way to tell an ABR from a Metro was the extra panel between the headlights and the bumper. That is exactly what i was told. Thanks for the info. Bill Newkirk |

So, poking around a bit more there is an old thread here that indicates that this bus was originally Schenk #428 and then MSBA #474 before being renumbered as EX 1000. |

I remember reading about the Flxible ABR in Bus World magazine with pics of Queen City Metro as the featured bus. I think it was their bus #80 which appeared to be a mid/late 70s new look Flxible that became a Flxible ABR. |
