Does Anyone Remember the Pepsi Cola Buses?

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sat May 14 14:53:21 2022

Back in the 50's the buses of the Newburgh-Beacon Bus Company where painted in the Pepsi-Cola Livery. The front of the bus featured a hugh Pepsi bottle cap.

I believe that several bus agencies used this form of advertising. Does anyone remember this?

San Francisco's MUNI had many of its buses and trolley coaches with Pepsi signs and advertising in the front. Other beverage advertisers included Mug Root Beer (founded locally in San Francisco, but distributed by Pepsi nationwide), Coors and Squirt (a grapefruit soda much like Fresca or Mello Yello).

Also, Johnstown Traction Company used to put those Pepsi caps signs on their streetcars back then, including the PCC's.

Yes, I recall buses with below-the-windshield Pepsi bottle caps somewhere, but the caps were about 18" or 24" in diameter. There was no Pepsi ad near them. New Jersey? Pennsylvania?

And those PCC's on the Johnstown, PA streetcar system, with the Pepsi Caps signs in front. They were featured on the older model ones too, which those cars are now scattered in different traction museums throughout the country.

William: Thank you for these pictures. I always remembered those bottlecaps as being huge. It amazing how many things get smaller as we get older.

On Long Island, where I have resided most of my life, I remember the pre-MSBA private companies, Schenck Transportation in particular, had large front end caps advertising 7up and Pepsi.

Yeah, but Sprite seems to take that thunder in the lemon-lime soda market. I did see a 7 Up can with "Zero Sugar" in a deli once.

"7 Up" just made a recent comeback..
Saw plenty of older brands in the Southern States earlier this year..

Mello Yello is the first to come to mind.

Mello Yello bottled by Coca-Cola.

7 Up and Dr. Pepper are co-owned with each other.

Pepsi has Sierra Mist.

Seen them all stocked at the local CVS Pharmacy in my neighborhood (Jackson Heights, Queens).

7 Up is regularly sold in supermarkets and grocery stores about as commonly as Coke and Pepsi. It just doesn’t appear as often in fountain drinks becase they’re mostly Sprite, or Sierra Mist if Pepsi. 7 Up pretty much has none of the fountain market.

My local American Legion post has Pepsi as its cola and Sprite for its lemon (7UP substitute) mixer.

Many of Boston's trackless trolleys had Pepsi signs, when I first entered college. They were definitely on the Harvard-Massachusetts line before the wires came down. This picture is obviously on the Harvard-Lechemere line, which was Boston Elevated's first trackless line.

Hi Larry, good to hear from you. I don't drink much soda anymore, except as a mixer (tonic water and seltzer). Haven't had 7UP in years.

Schweppes once made a lemon flavored tonic called Bitter Lemon, which I liked, but it's not made anymore - at least in the US.
