Reroutes of the B54 in the late 1980s/early 1990s |
|
Posted by Union Tpke on Tue Apr 14 07:46:26 2020 Originally, B54 service had a terminal loop of Myrtle Avenue, Jay Street, Johnson Street and Bridge Street. This is shown on my 1985 bus map.The 1990 bus map shows service running via Myrtle Avenue, Jay Street, Tillary Street and Flatbush Avenue Extension. Did this have to do with construction with MetroTech? Also, do any of you know when the change took place? ![]() Also, do any of you know when in 1992 the B54 start running inside MetroTech? Thanks and stay safe everyone. |

Probably better to say "previously" rather than "originally." The original route in the 1850s (before it even had a route number) was from the foot of Fulton Street, then along Myrtle Avenue, with no loop at all in what is now downtown Brooklyn. |

With the construction of Metrotech, Myrtle Av was truncated at Flatbush Av Ext so buses could no longer use that to access Jay St but had to use a narrow newly constructed private street. Johnson St was also partially cut off from Jay St so that buses had to now go all the way to Tillary St to get back to Flatbush and ultimately Myrtle. |

Sorry to go off topic but I noticed the B41 on the map you posted. Did all B41s go up to Furman St at this time and thus southbound runs all used Court St all the way down to Livingston? If there were any short-turn B41s (say, at Tillary St), it seems like they still used Court St southbound all the way to Livingston (along with the B25). |

I moved to Marine Pk in 1990 and I believe the B41s were still using Court St to Livingston. When Exactly the change was made, I don’t recall but it was done before I retired in 1997. One oddity I recall is that on the guide a rides certain intervals were marked “via post office” and it was explained that those buses so designated used the current route turning at Tillary and down Adams to Livingston. |

Then it was probably rerouted over the Brooklyn Bridge to Park Row when it was built or when the el was cutback and was further cut back probably to Sands St when trolleys no longer ran over the bridge and later cut back to Jay Street either as a bus or trolley. |

When MetroTech was built the plan was to have Myrtle Avenue go under the buildings so as not to disturb the bus route. After 9/11, private cars could only use the street to access the parking garage and buses were rerouted. |

Did the short-turns head back down via Court St? Would they go around the block near Tillary? What got me intrigued here was that the map posted shows all B25s and B41s headed southbound on Court all the way down to Livingston.I was a regular to this area in the early 90s but am struggling to remember any B41s at the corner of Court and Livingston. |

There might be a misprint in the map. I worked near there from 1975 through about 1982 and I always remember Court as southbound only south of Livingston. The northbound buses may have actually gone north on Adams and west on Joralemon and then on Court. The short turns either went as they do today on Tillary and Adams or else they may have made a right on Tillary and left on Carman Plaza East (Washington St) left on Johnson and south on Court to Livingston. I think the second option is more probable. I think I do remember B41s on Court and Livingston stopping in front of the B45s, but I can’t say for sure. If they didn’t stop there, then all buses including the Furman St ones would have had to turn on Tillary and Adams, but I can’t imagine such a glaring error on the map. |
