MTA Bus Stop (Guide-A-Ride box), a "little" update |
|
Posted by gold_12th on Wed Jan 22 00:52:00 2020 since MTA got rid of posted time schedules on the Guide-A-Ride boxes...It was replaced by this crap... MTA has now added back to some bus stops with MTA BusTime stop code number : TEXT "Bus Stop Code #" to 511123. I assume, every Guide-A-Ride boxes will get an update now. Little improvement, not what other riders complain by getting back the full time schedules to be posted on Guide-A-Ride box. Unless we get e-ink display soon.... |

Like all bus riders have smart phones, want to run up data charges, and even if they did, may not know how to use them. It should not be a requirement to use a public transit system, any more than telling them they must have bank account or be credit worthy.. |

You need neither a smart phone nor data to text. Are you going to complain that the instructions are written in English and so discriminate against the illiterate or against immigrants? It’s irresponsible to go out alone more than a couple of blocks without a cell phone. HOWEVER: I don’t see any valid reason for not including the schedules. |

It's an improvement, but a small one. And since it means they have to print individualized cards for each bus stop with the bus stop codes on them, and post them in the right locations, it can't be saving much money over posting the full schedules like they used to. |

The only advantage that I see for them is that the card need only be installed once and not changed if the schedule changes. They are saving on maintenance. I don’t know how much they are saving but unless it’s significant this is a major step down. |

Mostly it’s DOT that’s saving since they are doing the installation. The MTA only saves on paper, ink, and the cost of computer time since all the programming is already done. The savings for the MTA is negligible. |

No, you adapt the system to conform to paying customers, not the other way around. In 40 years, you may change your opinion about that. You will be 70 or 80 some day. |

And I’ll have a cell phone or its 2050s equivalent, like every 70-80 year old I know. And buses are subsidized, with people over 65 even more subsidized. So I’m not in favor of spending extreme resources to cater to a minority. |

Somewhat off topic, but do you think the subsidies will be similar in 2050? I myself was thinking that unless new highways are built within NYC boundaries (unlikely), the ratio of public transit to automobile travel can only rise in favor of public transit, even if only few extension projects are completed in the future. |

The workers that change and update the guide a ride drive around in MTA vehicles, so unless "these" DOT workers of yours drive MTA cars they must be MTA workers not DOT. |

I can see if the schedules would change weekly, or monthly. Most schedules don't vary for a year, sometimes more. It's not always the elderly. Specials needs individuals also are helped by printed schedules. |

I remember when I was still working at Livingston, that at some point the DOT was unable to post the new guide a rides in a timely manner and since O/P actually printed the guid a rides, one of the managers suggested that MTA employees should go out and installed them ourselves. Maybe that eventually happened. |

Some people like my mother will not use her Smartphone for e-mail or internet because she can't stand the idea of using the phone's keyboard on the screen. I have given her pens with stylus tips to no avail. But she is very good on the internet with her own desktop PC. |

The customer is always right. It is the service provider's job to adapt. That is why Jitterbug is in business with dumb cell phones and big buttons. |
