PHOTOS from Haifa

Last week, I had a staff retreat with work to Northern Israel, and since I was already up that way, decided to spend the weekend with my family in Haifa, Israel's third largest city. The most popular tourist site is probably the terraced Bahai Gardens. For the transit fan, it is home to the Carmelit, one of the world's smallest subway systems, the Israel Railway Museum, and what I believe is Egged's second largest intracity operation (after Jerusalem). The fleet here is made up entirely of 12 foot "standard" length buses: MAN NL-313s and also two Scania models (N280UB and K270LE) that are generally only found in Haifa though there are now some in Tel Aviv. I did some touristy stuff on Friday but I also did some busfanning. Here are some photos:

Why do they drive on the right - American style - rather than on the left - British style - when Israel was controlled by the British during the years when driving became widespread? I would have thought that the British would have implemented their road-use system during that time.

Or, did they used to, and, like Sweden, one day just changed from left to right?

No. They've been driving on the right since Turkish days. Driving doesn't just involve automobiles.

It wasn't a British colony. It was a League of Nations Mandate, and thus intended to be temporary.

But the railroad does operate left handed, like in France or Italy, where people drive on the right on the roads.

Good looking, yes, but I am not a fan of the Scanias.

But where are those Phileas buses and that BRT system that was supposed to be operating by now?

No clue, they made some service changes that were supposed to be part of the lead up to the Metronit (which is the name of the BRT) a few weeks ago in the Krayot, effectively suburbs of Haifa. There is also a large sign near where my relatives live (and nowhere near where the BRT will run) saying it will start in August.
