Somerset County, NJ is the proud owner of the 2 NJT demos (4024, 4025). They fixed whatever problems they had with them. Unfortunately, they will look to El Dorado for 4 buses in 2012. RTS's are just too expensive. (You get what you pay for). The driver who told me this said he HATES the E-D's: any little glitch, and the computer shuts the whole bus down. |

That's not the reason they are ordering the ElDorado's though. They wanted more RTS' bad, but they told MTS they could not wait until 2012. That bid was already put out, and the only manufacturer to respond was ElDorado. That contract has already been awarded. |

It's actually a lot stronger than I had imagined. Many people didn't know that throughout the entire bankruptcy process MTS kept their doors opened. They had to support all their current customers parts and customer service needs. That's the main reason every Legend operator out there wants more buses.Of course MTS is no Orion, Nova, or New Flyer, but they have a somewhat strong financial backing. It also helps that their buses have received rave reviews from drivers and mechanics. That was a major point for the investors. They also have something in the works for NJT again, as that played out a lot different than the rumors have led many to believe. Overall, they need MTA as the anchor to get them back in the door, and they have to sell at least 90 high floor buses to set everything in motion, and get the low floor to market. Once that is in place, they have 3 other agencies that are looking to piggyback off the MTA order. Then it should be smooth sailing from then on out. The best part about er-entering the market now is the fact that 300 TA's now have federal funds to order new buses. Another smart thing the new management is doing is NOT going for those large bids until late 2012 at the earliest. Smaller orders like the BTE, and a few others in the works are the best way to go. Bidding is just a long drawn out process that costs money and time. The goal is for MTS to get 180 buses to the MTA, which will strengthen their position in the market, and attract more investments. MTS wants to prove to the world they have this covered and can deliver the best RTS ever to the largest TA ever. I believe their marketing team needs to step it up though. They could be a lot better than they are. However, they don't want to spend any unnecessary money right now, as you know APTA costed them quite a few pretty pennies. @ Terrapin - Objectivity and maturity go hand in hand. Just because I like something doesn't mean I'm not going to tell it like it is. "The Real is on the rise!" -ENY |

You could say that. However, I'm pretty sure MTA would have said that months ago when the discussions first began, or after they reviewed the initial proposal. They have made it all the way to step 3, and MTA has pretty much said make sure the lift works, and prove that you can deliver. It's basically all up to MTS now. MTA has also requested a demo already before they formally sit down. That says a lot right there. It's also interesting, or maybe just coincidence that the MTA is set to award an order for "89" express buses 12 days after they meet with MTS. |

In a way yes. As scary as that sounds, that's partially the reality. If MTA bails, it will put MTS about a year behind schedule. TAMU wants 47 new RTS buses. 46 diesel and a hybrid, and GGT wants a base order of 20 with options for an additional 14.If they have to wait till 2013 for those orders, it will take the low floor launch out to 2014, and they may loose out on the prospective NJT order yet again as well. The NJT buses would be similar to the MTA buses, but they would likely have 2 doors. They can make it without MTA as they have a couple back-up plans, but it will definitely be a challenge. There are about 170 TA's waiting in the wings to see what happens next. TAMU is standing behind MTS 100%, and GGT purchased 31 1991 TMC's in an effort to hold out ordering new buses until they are sure MTS can bid on them. IF GGT could have an all RTS fleet like TAMU, they would. That's a hell of a statement right there! There is tons of potential out there, but all the stars need to line up for it all to work out. The best thing going for MTS is the fact that they can build good buses, have all the suppliers ready to go, and have the capacity at Roswell to produce as many buses as needed. There is also a high floor bus in the jig at position one on the assembly line ready to be built. This bus is slated for MTA and Altoona if all goes right. |

Well that's too bad about MTS and Somerset County. Some drivers actually prefer those truck-looking things too.I was hoping someone would buy NJT's Baby RTS's, and rebuild the engine, tranny, and HVAC. Then you'd have a good bus for another 10 years. Somerset County doesn't need 40' buses. |

Yes I know of 16 agencies actually. The bus is competing with MCI on the low end, and is the only one in its class. There are also about a dozen private operators looking at the bus as well. I don't know of any agencies that want 40 foot high floors other than Pueblo, Foxwoods, TAMU and Golden Gate. All the others want 42.5 footers. So actually, NJT may be done with standard high floors after the NABI order. The RTS Express is not a standard high floor. |

MTS has a very steep uphill climb. The North American bus industry is hyper-competitive right now and New Flyer, Gillig, Orion, Nova and NABI are not exactly going to take the resurgence of the RTS lying down. Production orders for any major TA will need to be lowest bid. NFI has shown it is willing to bid very, very aggressively to maintain its customer base, and both Orion and Nova have parents with deep pockets that could fund low bids to capture market share. With the R-188 program strapped for cash right now, I suspect the MTA is going to be taking a close look at its capital projects and I wonder how much interest they will continue to have in demonstrating yet another new bus model at this late date. |

True, MTS has a very huge hill to climb. But once the low-floor comes into the picture, the playing field will be leveled, and MTS won't always have to be the lowest bidder. They will get the awards off best value. The buses that are currently in service are exceeding well beyond the expectations of their operators, maintenance teams and drivers. Senor drivers are fighting over these buses, and you can take that to the bank. MTS has been supplying parts, customer service and support to all is customers consistently for the last 6 years. They even found ways to further reduce operating costs, and put preventive maintenance training programs in place for the TA's that has amazed even me.The warranty will be unlike anything you or I have ever seen. It's just insane! This is already coming to light straight from the operators. I had no idea MTS was in business for the last 3 years. I assumed that when they filed for bankruptcy they had closed their doors, and I stopped following their operations. Well just before APTA I got the shock of my life. The thing with the 42.5 ft HF express, is that it enters a market that pretty much died when Orion ceased high-floor production. Most all the customers that had the 42-43 seat 40 foot Orion, RTS, and NABI express buses started migrating over to MCI. Many of them don't need MCI's and can use a new 49 seat RTS. MTS isn't trying to get rich, they just plan on claiming their niche. As far as Capital Programs, trains and buses are in two different accounts. Trains are over budget and severely behind schedule, whereas bus procurements are also behind schedule, but significantly under budget. When the TA implemented the Bus Test & Evaluation Program, they drove productivity and bus durability up, while simultaneously driving costs down and leveling the playing field a bit. That was the single smartest move the MTA has done in their entire history. You get a great deal on buses parts and support. You know for a fact you won't be overcharged. On top of that, these are the best buses Nova, Prevost Orion and New Flyer have to offer. For MTS to shoot for anything other that BTE first would just be stupid in my opinion. Keep your back-up plans, but go for the agency that the world watches. MTS exited bankruptcy 11 months ago,and has yet to fold. So me being who I am will root for them to the end. I grew up in a city minutes away from the GM Truck & Bus Plant, Detroit Diesel, and the Big 3. It runs deep for me. American made vehicles and planes are the only thing I do. When Boeing lost the tanker contract to Airbus, I went ballistic! Called everybody! My aviation professors, classmates, parents, and everybody. We hit the net, called congress and stopped that shit immediately! I was born in America, and I welcome foreign competition. But my #1 goal is to help restructure the only thing I've ever known. Advocating for American made cars, trucks, planes, trains, and engines runs in my veins. That includes Canada too, as they are only a stones throw away from my hometown. When it comes to buses, cars, trucks, trains and planes, the US and Canada should have that on lock! It's 2012. Y'all better wake up! We are one of the the largest communities for an actual cause. What brings you all to these boards daily? How many of you actually contribute? In the transportation industry, we are the people who control that sector! We ride the buses, drive the trains, and catch the flights. Instead of talking shit and always trying to one-up everyone, some of you should actually do something! Stop sitting behind a computer all day if you have nothing to bring to the table. 90% of the time, I know exactly what's going on in the industry. Every blue moon I get caught with a right hook and admit I'm wrong. Most times I pretend not to know whats up just for some entertainment. Long story short.... The question is... What are all you "Trans Fans" doing with your lives? Do you post ignorant, inflammatory bullshit on a near daily basis, or do you contribute something? If someone audited all your online posts on the spot, what would you have to say for your self? Rant over.... LMAO! I'm on one! P.S..... Wait a minute...... Brian, you get the "Most Annoying Poster of the Decade in Transit Award." Get with the program dude! I know I'm crazy, but I really don't think you have a clue that you are. You need some friends and therapy. I don't know if you really are a few fries short of a happy, or just a jack ass. ........oh yeah, and about that Classic, it was just like the Orion VII OG/NG platform. Same structure with new appointments. The New Look and the New Look Classic were the exact same bus. When TMC built the Orion 1, a whole lot started to happen. The bus had a new signature style for Orion, with inner workings modeled after the RTS and New Look. Shortly after Orion's birth, GM introduced the New Look Classic, which took a few styling points from the Orion. |

Does the city really need mci cruisers to make service for express buses?? How much extra money are they spending per bus plus extra tires, fuel, maint, etc. |

The way I see it, only Staten Island and Ulmer Park in Brooklyn need 45' coaches. The other NYCT and MTA Bus depots don't need them.As for fuel usage I think both the locals and the expresses consume the same amount of fuel, yet the 45' coaches do have more parts than a local, hence the reason why the expresses direct operating costs are about 2-3 times the premium fare. I think the direct operating costs for the X90 when it used suburban-seated Orion 5s was lower than it was before the switch to MCIs. |

I have no problem with new RTSs as long isn't doesn't look too similar to the current ones. They better have a fancy interior like the LFS and never bring back that old outdated interior. A 2012 bus needs to look like a 2012 bus. |

The RTS Express could work. And before people post here saying "oh, customers use the MCI and could never get used to a RTS" remember back in the day NOVABUS models were assigned to the following:X25,X27,X28,X29,X63,X64,X68,X90/X92. Also, bear in mind BEELINE is currently using 1 door Orion V Suburban for the 4C route and you don't hear complaining. I cant wait to ride this and the local version. Hope UP gets it. That is true, but in my opinion they just need to stay dead. I love the Orion 5s but all good things come to an end. The RTS model served well. Leave it to the Orion Third Gens, Novas and the New Flyer Xcelsiors to lead the way. It's time someone else took charge. |
