The S51/S81, S53, S55/S56 (don't know what to do with those hopeless routes), S62/S92, S76/S86, and S79 would all remain the same. S40/S90: View S40/S90 in a larger map S44/S94: View S44/S94 in a larger map S46/S96: View S46/S96 in a larger map S48/S98: View S48/S98 in a larger map S52: View S52 in a larger map S54: View S54 in a larger map S57: View S57 in a larger map S58: View S58 in a larger map S59: View S59 in a larger map S61/S91: View S61/S91 in a larger map S67: View S67 in a larger map S71: View S71 in a larger map S73: View S73 in a larger map S74/S84: View S74/S84 in a larger map S77: View S77 in a larger map S78: View S78 in a larger map S89: View S89 in a larger map S93: View S93 in a larger map So what do you guys think? |

I just have a couple of comments:The reason why the S46 takes the shorter route to Mariners' Harbor is because it takes a long time to travel along certain sections of Castleton Avenue. Castleton Avenue is a fairly busy corridor, so it spends a lot of time loading passengers and stopping at the traffic lights there. I think the better solution would be to shift some buses from the S44 to the S46. I think the S48 should continue to serve Arlington, since that would generate more ridership. The only things west of South Avenue are a movie theater, Home Depot, and a trailer park. However, along South Avenue, there are more homes, as well as the Mariners' Harbor Houses and Arlington Terrace Apartments. I think the shorter S52 is better suited to serving New Brighton than the longer S44. The S58 route would get low ridership because of all the time it would spend in the Greenbelt, as well as the circuituous route it would take in New Springville. I don't think the S59 detour to CSI is necessary, as it would delay the route too much. I think having all S62 and S93 buses that currently short-turn at CSI extended to Richmond Avenue (or further) would be a better solution to the lack of north-south service to CSI. Passengers going noerthbound don't even save that much time taking the bus, as there is a shortcut to Richmond Avenue along Christopher Lane, which I've found faster to take even if an S62 was approaching. Your S71 terminates in the middle of nowhere. A better solution to serve Perth Amboy would be to either split the S74 at the Eltingville Transit Center, and have the western half extended to Perth Amboy, or send the S56 there (yes, it would bypass Tottenville High School, but it would serve Bricktowne, and there could always be S56 trippers from Tottenville H.S.) By the way, what would be the scheduling and span of your routes? Just list the routes that you would change the span of, as well as the new routes that you created (S58, S71, etc) |

It's interesting but most of those routes wouldn't work out well. Things are sort of fine now, it's just that certain routes need to be consolidated, could benefit from an extension, need more local/limited service or could use a branch to connect with New Jersey. I want nothing more at this point than a S53 limited & buses that actually make it on-time to the ferry even if that means the drivers have to run a little early because the scheduled time to arrive at St. George is 8:59am for example.You're giving bus coverage to areas where there would be little to no ridership and changing lines that already see good ridership. |

The S46 is packed by the time it usually reaches Jewett Avenue while the S44 usually has seats available at that point. However, along South Avenue, there are more homes, as well as the Mariners' Harbor Houses and Arlington Terrace Apartments. I wanted to give Forest Avenue one route for its entirety, and make it easier to get to Staten Island's largest movie theater. The S67 would still provide service to Forest Avenue west of Richmond Avenue though, but is that enough? I think the shorter S52 is better suited to serving New Brighton than the longer S44. I wanted the S44 to cover the S42 because it can also serve the Clyde Place-Arnold Street area. I also understand that the S52 not going all the way up to Richmond Terrace anymore hinders its purpose as a cross-island route. The S58 route would get low ridership because of all the time it would spend in the Greenbelt, as well as the circuituous route it would take in New Springville. The S58's purpose is just to make getting across the island at that point easier, and also to connect Midland Beach to the New Dorp shopping area. You're running a route to Perth Amboy not from a park and ride, or a major transfer point, but from Richmond Memorial Hospital. It touches no major population areas on Staten Island.You've got a route that essentially duplicates the existing 74, and serves the mall. No reason for this with the ease or transfers at Arthur Kill and Richmond. You're running a route from Midland Beach to West Shore Plaza via CSI and the Mall. Your route takes turns even cooked spaghetti wouldn't follow. You adjust the 74 so it actually gets further away from potential passengers who would use it. You're running the 59 to the Ferry for no good reason, given your extension of the 46 in your fantasy. You extend the 61 to the Eltingville Transit Center (which is really in Greenridge, but I digress...) when there's no destination on the route that can't be reached by existing routes that stop there. You zig-zag a local bus on residential streets that aren't suited for regular local bus service. And again, this duplicates nearby services. You extend a route that was established to serve a particular group of commuters to a destination that can already be reached by another route with the same origination point, and other routes that already exist. You don't take into account what streets on Staten Island are actually suitable for bus service; you don't take into account what the actual ridership demographics are on the south shore; and you connect points that are either already connected via other means or have no demand whatsoever for such service. |

Something I realized recently is that the MTA doesn't branch off routes in Staten Island or have nearly enough "rush hour extensions" as other boroughs. I gave your routes a second look and they all actually make perfect sense to me. I would send those plans in to the MTA!It covers a lot more areas & it wouldn't hurt to have two bus lines running on the same street (S73 & S74 on richmond road & S77/S78 on Hylan Blvd for example) as long as the scheduling works. If there's better coverage and less transferring involved then more people would ride the buses. The S44/S94 would do better if it ended at West Shore Plaza and have the S40/S90 terminate at Gothaels Rd instead with the S48. If you want the SI Mall you would have either Castleton Avenue or Richmond Terrace which is better because the SI Mall needs more & faster access from all over the Island instead of a couple of routes & having to transfer. |

Richmond Road already has two lines operating along most of its length (weekdays), the 74 and the 76. These are each supplemented by a limited (84, 86, outbound only) during the PM Peak.The mall has direct access daily from Victory Blvd, Richmond Ave, and Hylan Blvd buses, as well as the 44 whch runs between Forest and Richmond Terrace. From the south shore, there is direct weekday-only access via the 55 and 56, but it's clear from that service that there's really no ridership base for service outside of weekdays, and I'm quite surprised that these routes run all day, rather than just at their peak hours (6-9am and 2-5pm) Having to transfer once is not a deterrent to local bus ridership. You're not going to get the people who don't currently take the bus to the mall to do so by eliminating the need to transfer. Every route on Staten Island offers a transfer to a route that serves the mall. Just like I used to tell people about highways, you don't need an interstate route between every destination pair. They don't all need it, and it's a waste of resources to provide it. |

If you're going from Brooklyn to the Mall, there's the 79, which could certainly use a limited-stop companion. The 79 even offers transfers to all but two routes the 93 offers transfers to. |

I'm not into playing fantasy map games (anymore); I don't collect buses (real or toy); and i dont go out of my way to see them if they're not museum quality. I do, however, ride buses daily, and I'm a fan of mass transit in general. I enjoy participating in many of the threads that come up, seeing photos of locations I've yet to visit, and learning about many of the things that come up here. But I don't have to justify my participation to you, or anyone. I'm still waiting for your reasonable response. |
