I believe you meant that the situation sucks more for those who have to solely rely on buses. The way I comprehended what you wrote, it was as if buses themselves suck more when there is no trains nearby. Which doesn't make sense to me.BTW, in those places where there is no rail service, most people chose to live there for various reasons, so the situation really shouldn't suck for them since they probably had a choice to live somewhere closer to a train. |

The S40/S90 are pretty good and reliable routes too, but I would definitely be glad to see them replaced by the North Shore Line.The rest of the routes do suck though because they're all insanely long and because of that, they rarely connect with the ferries that they're supposed to. |

Then 40 minutes later the train arrives, packed, with vomit on the floor. Doors are locked on some trains making escape impossible. Oh what a joy to ride a train! But you wouldn't know about these affairs; your tucked away snugly in your crib. In spite of ball that I too love trains, not favoring one mode over the other. There are people, however, that stay off subways and ride alternate buses for those and other reasons. The rest of the routes do suck though because they're all insanely long and because of that, they rarely connect with the ferries that they're supposed to. The thing about Staten Island's bus routes is that most of them provide urban service for suburban demand. |

The viaduct through Port Richmond needs a thorough inspection; and between PR and the ferry the line is encroached upon, runs through private property unprotected, under a building that should be condemned, and is badly washed out. Restoring the line in any capacity will cost in the hundreds of millions, and the money is better spent on improving the existing bus service. |

Nothing is perfect. Let me add this: I had an Advertising professor at Drexel tell us, "Nothing gives a smoother ride that steel on steel". Professor C.J. Culbert was right. But you can't lay rails everywhere, so on came the bus. Plus the debate about the destruction of the trolley system. Now cities are getting smart and reviving light rail, some putting back rails and wire they already had and destroyed, IIRC. Like trains, streetcars, LRV's , trolleybuses and buses. They all have a place in our systems. Shit happens..... |
