The problem is, unlike up here, the fans in DC aren't really keeping a watchful eye on movements.

Hell, I'm even noticing that some don't even know a new order is coming until the bus pops up in service....tsk tsk tsk.

I can't find ANYTHING about the new NABIs I'd shot on my recent visit on any of the DC boards.

They HAD a fleet of RTS's back in the 80's and early 90's [9001-9112]. The buses were originally slopebacks[built in 1979] but in 1983-84 they were squared with various types of AC equipment. They lasted until 1998 when they were wiped out by the Orion V's.

The ART NABIs are there in the June 2009 Observation Photos under DC Transit Today. Myself and at least one other person on that board posted pics of them back in June when they first hit the streets.

I think most of us observe as we go along with our daily doings. I can't speak for the others, but I will say that while I'm very much a transit fan, transitfanning is definitely more of a third or fourth priority. I suspect that in NYC there a lot of twentysomethings (and younger) fans who actually spend significant amounts of time chasing and reporting on the latest happenings. I know when I was still in NYC and younger I had plenty of extra time and knew just about all NYCTA movements in surface and especially RTO. For me the difference nowadays is that I'm in my forties, married and I just have a lot less time to do transitfanning.

Because the '79 RTS were pieces of junk. WMATA had hell maintaining the buses as they were scattered all over the system. In the mid 80's, they were restricted to Montgomery Depot where they lived out their days.

The DC transit fanbase is much smaller. As Wayne pointed out, people have other priorities besides chasing new buses. Not everyone on that message board is local to the DC area at this point. There is only one employee of a local TA registered to post there right now AFAIK. All that being said, the new ART buses were reported on in multiple posts in multiple threads, and other new deliveries are usually discussed prior to their arrival.

The person/people behind DCATZ are doing a great job, I'm glad the board is there and I enjoy talking with those who do post there. It may not be perfect and the location of every vehicle in the DC area may not be known at every moment, but it has the best and most active DC area transit message board that I know of. I'm thankful that it exists as the resource that it is with the people that it has, and am quite satisfied with it, and I imagine most of the other participants there are too seeing as how often they post.

As a former DC area resident (1996-2000) and someone who spent the entire month of June in Northern Virginia, I am a frequent "lurker" of the DCATZ board. I think the people there do an excellent job. It's certainly better than anything I have found for my new hometown (the Bay Area).

That's a very good question. They have a decent amount left, but as they are Fairfax's oldest buses, they don't run much outside of peak hours. All of them are essentially running in the West Falls Church area/Reston Town Center (?) area.

Yes, I made a typo. Those DE40LF/Rs indeed started showing up in early 2006.
