I wish I could get around to seeing other ETB systems. I did like riding Boston's system - the drivers handled the buses beautifully - if only I had more time up there! |

Those Seattle pics are actually taken nearly 3 years ago. I'd bet they're still doing their thing today, but I don't know how many they have. |

The Bredas should still be chugging along, the MANs I'm not sure about, I was surprised that I found them the first time I was up there in '06... |

The Seattle dual mode trackless trolleys were converted to straight trackless when the subway was converted to light rail. They now run on the regular, surface trackless lines. These were some really nice photos. I really enjoyed them. Thanks for sharing. |

I remember seeing those Seattle Bredas about five years ago when I was there. A fella I know told me that the engine and transmission remains in place even after they have been converted to 'trolley only' to avoid balancing issues. Here's some trolleybus photos I have taken.... A Skoda in Bratislava, Slovakia. Some kind of new one in Milan, Italy. One of the Vancouver Flyers, at the turning circle in Stanley Park. Old SF Muni Flyer at Transbay Terminal. Neoplan trolleybus in Basel, Switzerland. These are gone now, the wires taken down and the buses replaced with CNG powered vehicles. Also in Switzerland, a Mercedes in the Zurich suburbs. Ganz-Ikarus in Bucharest, Romania. Also in Romania, an ex-Austrian Graf & Stift in Timisoara. Again in Timisoara, a Rocar-built trolleybus near the train yard. The trolleybuses here were in a terrible state, although I think the old ones have all been replaced now. Battered old Zil outside the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. More modern Russian trolleybus, this time near the Kremlin in Moscow. Another Moscow example, this time near a suburban metro station in what seemed to be their 'house' colours. |

Great pics, everybody!I've only been on TT's/ETB's in Vancouver and San Francisco, and they are really cool. Very quiet and very zippy acceleration. Too bad New Jersey got rid of their "ASV's" decades ago... bad enough the trolley system was raped; at least they could've kept the trackless trolleys! |

Nice pics but are these trolley buses needed today ? They make the city look terrible with all the wires hanging over the streets. And the upkeep of the wires and buses must be constant. With today's hybrids I doubt these make sense. We are always hearing about problems at Septa with their new ones and wires. |

You can thank your "friends" from General Motors {et al} for the demise of New Jersey's "All-Service Vehicles". Even though they never actually took over the Public Service operation, they had a big hand in influencing the decision to scrap the ASV's and replace them with GM buses. Money talks!General Motors is now getting just what they deserve, finally! I have no sympathy for them. They destroyed many electric transit systems in this country, in the name of "greed"! But, it's slowly coming back from the ashes, now that the US auto industry and lobby is mortally wounded and unable to kill it. We're seeing a rebirth of light rail and street car systems in dozens of cities. I predict the clean, quiet, electric trolley coach will stage a big comeback too. It certainly is a "Green" form of transportation. With solar, wind or hydro power, it reduces our dependency on foreign sources of oil. |

Hybrids have proven to be not such an economical vehicle. For example, Edmonton scrapped plans to by hybrids and has ordered 121 straight Diesel buses from New Flyer. Their big mistake was in scrapping their trolley coach system, at this late date. But Alberta is oil country. Note, oil prices are going up again!Today's modern overhead trolley wire systems can and are designed to blend in with the street scape and not look terrible, as you say. I've actually heard people say, "what wires" when asked if they mind them. And don't forget, a trolley coach lasts three times as long as a motor bus. It can be stored outside in freezing weather and has far less moving parts to maintain. |

Very nice late day type shot of 809 on the 66 loading at FTC.That's one of the coaches we had on our 2 coach charter last year. The other coach was,805, it had bad steering. (I wonder if SEPTA ever fixed it?) |
