8 days worth of pics ( 12.13.08 - 12.21.08 ) |

Posted by lbt 9415 on Mon Dec 22 02:47:23 2008 12.12.08 - The day after I arrived from NYC ( this vacation wasnt long enough lol. I had fun out there. It was nice to meet the new faces as well ). I took an extra day off because the jet lag really took a toll on me, and I wasnt feeling well on the plane at all.12.13.08 - I managed to do a change of assignment and scored a PM piece on the 54 route. The 54 is pretty kickback route. The bus was # 5358. For sure I thought this would be the last D40LF i would drive...later I would prove myself wrong. ![]() 12.14.08 - This is the first day of our Winter Pick Todays bus was LNG NABI 2214. The check engine light stayed on until the engine shut down. I was able to restart the bus & continue enroute until another coach was brought to me ... which in turn happened to be LNG NABI 2229 ( BOTH REPOWERED ). ![]() ![]() 12.15.08 - Off Day. Had a doctors appointment with a general surgeon. I will be having surgery the 2nd week of January...so I will be taking about 4-5 weeks off work. 12.16.08 - Off day. Today was my moms birthday. So I took here to this really good Mexican Restaurant in West L.A. 12.17.08 - My monday. Todays bus on my first half was LNG NABI 2153. Nothing special about it. On my split, I decided to go hunting for that CNG Crown school bus. The only thing I found was this CNG Blue Bird operated by Garden Grove Unified School District. ![]() The bus for the 2nd half is C40LFR # 7523. Rain, shine, sleet, snow, it still gets pre-tripped. Leave the yard about 5 minutes early and made the 34 mile deadhead to Dana Point. I start as a 91 school tripper...then 1 Roundtrip on the 91..and a one-way 83 northbound to Disneyland ![]() ![]() ![]() C40LFR # 7579 ![]() 12.18.08 - 7515 was my bus for the 2nd half of the day on thursday. I picked up more school kids than I did the day before. This run desperately needs an artic bus. ![]() see .... ![]() 12.19.08 - Same school kids, different C40LFR. Oh yeah that VanHool T2045 also had the Jake Brake on ... hot hot hot !!!! ![]() ![]() 12.20.08 - Saturdays bus was D40LF # 5353. This bus was supposed to be withdrawn from the fleet, as it had the farebox and radio ripped about 2 weeks ago. They reinstalled the farebox + radio ... I guess they need it back it service for a lil longer. Yuck the line I hate the most, the 29. Seen here at Buena Park Metrolink Sta. ![]() This is the only 5300 that has a fire suppression system. ![]() |

A 34 mile deadhead sounds really, really long. I imagine it's all (or nearly) freeway? I still can't get over how good the old stuff on borrowed times looks. 5353 appears that it's marker lights are not working. That cross-country flight is kinda rough. We usually fly a red-eye on the return from the west coast, then sleep into the afternoon. The different time zone works well for us, because we like to sleep in, so while out west we continue to operate on EST/EDT. |

The 34 mile deadhead is long and is all freeway. When I took this shot of 5353, I shut the bus off ( night park ) and turned on the fog lights :)The eastbound trip from LAX-ATL wasnt too bad. I got more sleep on that flight since i was up for nearly 20 hours the prev day. |

The D40LFs are approaching their retirement limits ( 12 yrs or 500,000 miles whichever comes first ). Most of the D40LFs have more than 600,000 miles and working hard. As more of the C40LFRs are coming in, the D40LFs are moved to the contigency fleet and to the "bone yard". The yard im at, we have about 15 D40LFs that are in the contigency fleet. About 5 are used as training buses, and the rest are just bone yard bound. |

Too bad that I missed a lot of the older stuff when I came in November! I saw some D40LFs up close, but I really wanted to ride the 1995 D40LFs (with the soft seats). I didn't get a chance to ride on a D40LF but I guess the 1999 D60LFs are pretty similar (except for the fact that they are articulateds that are 20 feet longer). 2. After seeing the C40LFR on the 187, I went to octa.net and checked out the 187 Bus Book page because for some reason I thought that 100-series routes all used "mid-size or small buses" Turns out the page also says that the 187 is operated by "mid-size or small buses" but a C40LFR is normally not in that category. Either that statement in the Bus Book is incorrect, or the 187 is operated both directly by OCTA using large size buses and by a contractor (Veolia?) that also operates small size buses, or 7579 is assigned to Veolia (despite not having any visible "operated by" stickers that would indicate otherwise). However, the 187 doesn't really look like it needs 40-footers except for school trippers. 3. Yep that school tripper looks packed...but at least the kids who ride OCTA buses don't deface the windows or interior (or if they do, it is cleaned up really fast)! Unfortunately, in the city of Phoenix proper the school trippers are where most of the buses (especially articulateds) get trashed. Even our brand new D60LFs are already tagged up in the back, and some of the older ones assigned to Phoenix-West division are starting to look like LACMTA buses (thankfully if someone writes on the seats, it won't show up)! 4. Except for the paper on the floor (which can be removed easily) that 7506 is very clean and bright like the other OCTA C40LFRs that I went on! I did notice one difference between the OCTA C40LFR seating configuration and the Valley Metro 2006 C40LFR seating configuration. On the Valley Metro C40LFRs there is a second pair of seats on the driver side of the bus (rather than OCTA's two rows on the passenger side and one row on the driver side configuration). As a result if I recall (I haven't been on a Valley Metro 2006 C40LFR in a while) the first set of sideways seats on the driver side is a group of 3 rather than 4. 5. Does the 29 mostly use artics or is is almost all 40-footers? I ask because it seems like a pretty busy route. |

The 1999 D60LFs are somewhat similar. We still have a handful of 1997/98 D40LFs running around including 5313-5316, 5406-5410,5329-5344,5351, 5376-5381 1. The 187 is shared with Divisions 1 and 4. Its one of those lines that barely picks up a load. They made an error in the bus book, referring to the 187 as a small vehicle route. Other in-house 100 series lines include the 145( some trips interline with the 51 ) , 167( weekend trips interline with the 24 ), and 177 ( weekday trips interline with the 82). Its funny because the 177 is operated by Division 1 on the weekday and Division 4 on the weekend. The 187 doesnt need 40fters. However, the 187 doesn't really look like it needs 40-footers except for school trippers. This is like the 4th school tripper Ive done. Most of them are well behave and after they get off, theres definitely paper on the floor, but hey kids will be kids. Some of the kids Ive encountered are pretty much well-behaved. 3. Yep that school tripper looks packed...but at least the kids who ride OCTA buses don't deface the windows or interior (or if they do, it is cleaned up really fast)! Unfortunately, in the city of Phoenix proper the school trippers are where most of the buses (especially articulateds) get trashed... thats true. first row of seats though have LOTS of legroom. I did notice one difference between the OCTA C40LFR seating configuration and the Valley Metro 2006 C40LFR seating configuration. On the Valley Metro C40LFRs there is a second pair of seats on the driver side of the bus (rather than OCTA's two rows on the passenger side and one row on the driver side configuration) The 29 gets busy. Division 1 ran artics on the 29 during the summer months and on trippers when needed. Artics on that line should be an everyday habit. 5. Does the 29 mostly use artics or is is almost all 40-footers? I ask because it seems like a pretty busy route. |

Was this inside the restaurant or outside? That is a surprise because I always thought that Chandler High School was not necessarily a "bad" school where people would want to tag anything up. Nevertheless, I was on one of the ex-Scottsdale 35-LFWs that were transferred from the RPTA to Tempe and even those were tagged up (albeit not that badly). I was surprised because I thought that these buses did not really go near "bad" areas where this would happen, or run school trippers in "bad" areas. My high school had very little tagging, if at all with the exception of the older bathrooms. The students also never vandalized the city buses (although ironically we got the RTS buses where the windows were heavily scratched up and vandalized). Finally, may I add that tags are not necessarily limited to "bad" schools. Even some of the Stanford buses (yes, Stanford University) have some graffiti on the back of the seats (unless they were running the buses in local service), and I have seen it at USC and in the back of some UCSD buses. |
