The same bus at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds in Cincinnati in 2005 and at American Bus & Accessory in 2007:Trivia: this was never a Cincinnati Transit bus. It originally ran for Kansas City Public Service and finished out its service life at TANK in Covington, KY. |

Has it ever occurred to your brilliant mind that this was the original mirror? Surely to spend a lot of money on this beautiful restoration and then install an inappropriate mirror is just not logical. In that era (I was alive and saw them, I don't believe you were) many different styles of mirrors existed; each transit operation specified what type of mirror they wanted. Unless you can prove this wasn't the original mirror, it's best not to say anything. |

The bus has a different mirror in this photo on CTHA's website. I don't know the story, but the mirror that's on it now resembles the one on the Grumman 870 pictured near the bottom of the page. |

The photo of 359, which shows a longitudinal mirror, was probably taken after the initial restoration and that was the only mirror they could obtain at that time. When the correct mirror was obtained, they installed the one shown in recent photos. Many NYC area buses did not have right side mirrors during the 1950s era (that must have been fun driving!). Look at older bus photos to confirm this. |

But, NYC bus drivers had a way of setting up the inside mirror(s) so that the right side could be seen. I remember my father showing me this around 1962. He was a chassis maintainer for Surface Transportation/MaBSTOA, from time to time I would go to work with him. It was really cool when he did road calls and we'd take out a bus to replace one that had broken down. |

Right Side Mirrors (was Glendale Car Show) |

Posted by Bill from Maspeth on Wed Jun 25 17:39:40 2008, in response to Re: Glendale Car Show, posted by SUBWAYSURF on Wed Jun 25 13:54:30 2008. I think that sarcastic wiscrack was totally uncalled for. Joe knows his buses. Now retired, he knew his stuff. He drove buses for a living for many years. The addition of right side mirrors on local transit buses is indeed a recent phoenomon. I can't prove it with pictures because I don't have the home equipment, but all you have to do is look at the old pics. I'm sure someone here can post some randomly. When I rode buses in my younger years, there were no side mirrors both on the fishbowls and the old looks. An apology to Joe from you would be in order when you are proven wrong. |

Joe makes an earlier post that said NYC buses did not have right side mirrors in the '50's, you want proof calling him a know-it-all, then you make this post verifying exacly what Joe said: that the right side mirrors were indeed not around then in NYC. Maybe you've had a feud with Joe in the past. Fine. But it's obvious to me that as soon as he started this thread, your purpose was to discredit him. Take it elsewhere. |

When you have immature, childish minds who have nothing better to do but spend their lives on the Internet and become be self-appointed know-it-alls, regardless of their actual age, this is what happens. I honestly don't know who subwaysurf is, but he seems to have something against me since I sell transit photos at what he considers inflated prices. Of course, his mini-mind has absolutely no idea what it costs to produce these high quality items, and the meager profits are channeled into other transit preservation projects, such as maintenance of the 1970 bus I own. I'd love to know what this narrow-minded "gentleman" has done towards the cause of historic transit preservation. I strongly suspect it's nothing. |

In regards to right side mirrors on TA/OA buses, I do recall in my childhood years (1970s) that the typical OA buses did not have a right side mirror. They would have the mirrors when rehabbed, but it seems that once the mirror got damaged, it was usually not replaced. I don't know about those at TA depots, but I lving near the Bronx Zoo, I didi see FLU buses regularly which often did have right side mirrors. Then, I recall in the late 70s they started installing the folding mirrors on most OA buses. |

I love the photos of the restored Cincinnati old look GM bus. Thanks for taking them, Joe. That Cincinnati decal is gorgeous! I love the Marmon-Herrington trackless trolley on it. Cincinnati used that logo on most everything, including tokens and printed matter. And speaking of right-hand mirrors, my historic buses don't have them and never did. I actually learned to drive a bus without a right-hand mirror. |
