I remember riding some of the old Surface Transit 1948 vintage GM buses in the Bronx in the early 1960s. They were well worn out and poorly maintained. A lot of them belched black smoke out the back whenever the driver started up from a bus stop. By comparison the NYCTA and Queens Transit buses in Flushing where we lived were much better. Even the older GM buses were clean and well maintained and there were a lot of New Look buses on routes like the Q44 and Q25/34. I spent a lot of time riding the buses until I finally got my driver's license in 1970. |
