Because most programs to improve surface mass transit in NYC have been watered down to appease those who oppose anything more effective for transit users than the SBS that DOT and MTA implement. What are you going to do.Again, I have certain standards for travel times on the B44 SBS (posted in January; I hope you saw them) that I do not think would be attainable unless all parking were strategically removed from its corridor between Flatbush Ave and Flushing Ave, or at least a lot of parking were strategically removed (from the problem areas, like Lenox Road to Church Ave, Atlantic Ave to E Pkwy, the Newkirk Ave area, and the HSBC block of Nostrand). I think that if much or all parking for private autos (commercial vehicles ok) were removed from the Flushing Ave-Flatbush Ave section of the B44 SBS corridor, the B44 SBS would be much faster than it is now and MTA would have no problem publishing schedules with much leaner running times (like those I proposed, which would result in an average speed of 11.28 mph on the Flushing-Ave "H" section) than the excessive garbage that is currently printed on the B44 SBS schedules (which dictate a measly average speed of 7 to 9 mph most of the time). MTA publishes these schedules with measly running times now because MTA knows that an offset bus lane is nothing but paint on asphalt, and as long as there is a legal parking lane for private automobiles next to it and law enforcement is nearly useless, there will be double parking that delays bus service by causing buses to slow down to circumvent double-parked vehicles and miss green signals on some section of that bus lane EVERY SINGLE DAY. But, once again, nobody wants to give up those [legal] street parking spaces for anything. After everything I have experienced, witnessed, and observed with respect to these issues over the course of my existence, for me to own or use a personal automobile of my own would probably be about as unfitting as...well, I cannot think of any great examples at the moment. Doing that parking removal thing with the B44 SBS would probably solve the speed issues in such a way that trams probably would not be needed to significantly solve any speed issues; I mainly support trams because they offer more interior room (for cargo or passengers) than buses, provide better ride quality (smoother braking and acceleration, no potholes to worry about), and do not necessarily require operators to sit while operating like automobiles do. I have many other reasons for supporting the idea of trams replacing buses, but I cannot list all of them at the moment, so moving right along.. |
