Once again, there seems to be a misunderstanding. For at least the second time, I am asking you to please stop using umlauts or tildes (whichever one of those things means those little periods above letters) in your posts. As for your indiscriminate use of the word flying, I will address that in another thread. Unbelievable.

My New Year's Resolutions

Posted: 12/31/2012 6:03 pm
Happy New Year! Have you made your resolutions for 2013? Here are mine:
  1. Learn the names of the people two doors down from me* and invite them over for dinner.

  2. Learn how to make dinner.

  3. Buy a gun. Stroke it. Squeeze it. Hold it. Love it. Shoot it! Ahhhh... Buy more guns... Stroke them...**

  4. Stop saying, "I support the troops." I don't. I used to. I understand why so many enlisted after 9/11. Sadly, many of them were then trapped and sent off to invade Iraq. I felt for all of them. I understood those who joined because of a lousy economy. But at some point all individuals must answer for their actions, and now that we know our military leaders do things that have nothing to do with defending our lives, why would anyone sign up for this rogue organization?

  5. Apologize for No. 4. I have enormous respect for anyone who would offer to sacrifice their life to defend my right to live. Is there any greater gift one can give another? It's not the troops' fault they're sent to invade other countries for dubious reasons and outright lies. It's OUR responsibility to prevent this, to elect representatives who believe in peace, and to only put our troops in harm's way when it's absolutely necessary. My uncle was killed in World War II. Today would have been his 90th birthday. My dad still misses him. Our family has served this country in the military since the Revolutionary War. None of them watch Fox News.

  6. Drink more water.

  7. Wear color.

  8. Find the best person who can run for and win the governor's chair here in Michigan in 2014. Work every day to win back the Michigan House and Senate from its Republican majority.

  9. Read more fiction. Support my local indie bookstore. Help people create Little Free Libraries and put one up in front of our theater in Traverse City. Don't use glowing screens to read books. Write the next one.

  10. Keep walking, dude!
That's my list. Send me yours via Twitter and Facebook. Click here to join me on the walks. Let's be kind to each other in the coming year. And let's encourage Obama to ACT, to make history, and to be remembered as one of our greatest presidents.

Here's hoping for a peaceful 2013.
* What, in your community with the armed guards? Not people in downtown Detroit?
** Is this what you actually say to your armed guards? Nope; didn't think so.

Kathy Griffin Simulates Oral Sex on Anderson Cooper

What's more awkward than Kathy Griffin in a bra on live television?

Kathy Griffin simulating oral sex on Anderson Cooper during the duo's New Year's Eve coverage?

But that's exactly what CNN viewers were stuck watching Monday night, as the comedian attempted to make things as awkward as possible for her co-host throughout that network's broadcast.

"You’re scaring me,” Cooper said shortly after midnight, as Griffin kept referring to his "Christmas present." "This is getting to be the night bad things happen.”

Yes, a man who has covered tragedies in Rwanda, Lebanon and around the world was frightened by Kathy Griffin. And for good reason. Watch the vide now:

Primary Care Doctors Becoming Scarce (SUCK IT!)

Posted by Olog-hai on Wed Jan 2 07:47:35 2013, in response to SUCK IT!, posted by Spider-Pig on Tue Nov 6 23:34:30 2012.

San Francisco Chronicle

Primary care doctors growing scarce

Primary care physicians could be needed most

Drew Joseph
Updated 11:00 pm, Tuesday, January 1, 2013
Roughly 4 million additional Californians are expected to obtain health insurance by 2014 through the federal health law, an expansion that will likely exacerbate the state's doctor shortage and could even squeeze primary care access in the Bay Area, experts say.

Even without the Affordable Care Act, a worsening doctor shortage had been forecast as the state's and nation's population ages and grows, and as a generation of older doctors retires. But by mandating that individuals have insurance and expanding Medicaid, the law will extend coverage to an additional 30 million Americans and place a greater strain on the physician workforce, especially for primary care.

"Now with the Affordable Care Act, we're going to have an even greater need," said state Sen. Ed Hernandez, D-West Covina (Los Angeles County), chairman of the Senate Health Committee. The need for more primary care doctors is addressed in the federal health law through various financial incentives, and California's medical schools and hospitals are putting a greater emphasis on primary care training and expanding residency programs. But the effects of such efforts may not be felt for years.

In an attempt at a more immediate fix, Hernandez said he plans to push for legislation to give pharmacists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants more authority in patient care.

"We have to use the current provider workforce we have much more efficiently," he said.

California's doctors

The strength of California's physician workforce falls in the middle when compared with other states. A 2011 report from the Association of American Medical Colleges found that California had a higher physician-to-resident ratio than most states and a higher primary care physician-to-resident ratio than the national average.

A new medical school at UC Riverside, set to open next fall, could help ease shortages in areas like the Inland Empire, but the AAMC report found that more than 30 percent of California's doctors were 60 or older - the second highest rate of any state.

At the moment, the Bay Area, Sacramento and Orange County have enough primary care physicians and specialists, said researchers in a 2010 report from the California HealthCare Foundation, a grant-making nonprofit that works to improve health care in California.

But Maribeth Shannon, the director of the foundation's market and policy monitor program, said the Bay Area could find itself in a primary care crunch as more people gain coverage.

"That will be tested," she said.

The report found that a number of regions — including San Diego and Los Angeles — had more than enough specialists but not enough primary care physicians, and that rural areas lacked a sufficient number of all kinds of doctors.

Progress being made

Through the health law, the federal government has increased funding for primary care programs. It is also boosting payments for primary care physicians who see Medicaid patients, although studies have found just over half of California's primary care doctors were accepting new patients with Medi-Cal, the state's Medicaid program.

Physicians say they are beginning to see progress.

Dr. Thomas Balsbaugh, director of the family and community medicine residency program at UC Davis, said more medical school graduates at the university are entering family care residencies in recent years. And the Davis residency program has grown by two spots in recent years, from 46 to 48 residents.

"People are recognizing that we're in an unsustainable pattern," he said.

The family care residency program at UCSF has also expanded, from having spots for 13 first-year residents to 15, said Dr. Margo Vener, a professor of family and community medicine.

Vener said choosing primary care as one's field is a difficult choice for medical students, in part because many graduate in debt and specialists pull much higher salaries.

A student's story

Kendra Johnson, a fourth-year UCSF medical student, estimated she will be $160,000 in debt when she graduates and called the fact that specialists make more "the elephant in the room" for her and her classmates who hope to enter primary care residencies.

Johnson, who is from Wisconsin, said she was drawn to primary care because it involves keeping communities healthy.

"People are realizing how important (primary care) is in a way that's kind of novel," Johnson said.

Both Vener and Johnson said the notion that the best and brightest should pursue specialties is starting to change with the emphasis on primary care, especially with the hope that it can reduce care costs.

"It's increasingly clear that the cutting edge in medicine is primary care," Vener said.

Taliban likens US Afghan role to Vietnam War

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban Wednesday likened the planned withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan to America's pullout from Vietnam, calling it a "declare victory and run" strategy.

A statement from the militant group said the ongoing transfer of security operations from U.S. troops to Afghan forces was merely a retreat similar to the American withdrawal from South Vietnam prior to the communist victory there in 1975.

American-led NATO troops are scheduled to pull out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014, although the U.S. will leave a residual force behind and other NATO countries have pledged continuing support of the Kabul government.

"They want to flee from Afghanistan just as they turned tail and ran from Vietnam," the Taliban statement said. "When America faced utter destruction in Vietnam, they came up with the formula `declare victory and run' and want to utilize the formula of `transfer security and run' here in Afghanistan."

The United States withdrew is combat troops from South Vietnam in 1973, leaving South Vietnamese forces to face the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong who marched into the capital, Saigon, two years later.

Congress tightens belt, trims spy budget for 2013

By KIMBERLY DOZIER
Jan. 1, 2013 3:23 AM EST
WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress has drastically trimmed the budget for U.S. spies and satellites for 2013, though not quite as deeply as the White House wanted.

In one of the last votes of the year, House lawmakers voted Monday 373-29 in favor of a Senate-passed bill to slightly boost the president's $72 billion budget request for intelligence agencies including the CIA, adding extra cash for the counterterrorism fight against al-Qaida, and the counterintelligence fight against foreign governments trying to spy on the U.S.

That's down sharply from roughly $80 billion in 2012, which marked the peak of intelligence spending since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"The bill holds personnel levels, one of the biggest cost drivers, generally at last year's levels," said House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich. "Even so, the bill adds a limited number of new personnel positions for select, high-priority positions, such as FBI surveillance officers to keep watch on terrorists."

The House Intelligence Committee's ranking member, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., said the bill "invests in personnel and programs that are working and cuts things that aren't."

The bill was stripped of several measures meant to block the leaking of classified information, including a provision that would have limited which government officials could brief journalists on intelligence. The measures had been drafted after lawmakers objected to a series of news stories that anonymously quoted senior administration sources describing sensitive intelligence programs, such as the process by which targets are chosen for lethal drone strikes overseas.

The chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., says the measures were taken out to get the bill passed but that the issue remains a problem.

"Unfortunately, I am certain that damaging leaks of classified information will continue, and so the committee will need to continue to look for acceptable ways to address this problem," Feinstein said Friday after the Senate version of the bill passed.

The legislation, if signed into law by President Barack Obama, will require the White House to inform Congress when it decides to share classified information with reporters, giving lawmakers a heads-up before they read about it in the media.

Newspaper Hires Armed Guards After It Enraged The Community By Publishing Info On Local Gun Owners

Abby Rogers
January 2, 2013 9:25 AM
A New York state newspaper is taking drastic steps to protect its staff after it enraged gun owners in two counties.

The Journal News, a Gannett-owned newspaper in Westchester, N.Y., published a map showing the names and addresses of licensed gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties.

The Journal News tried to do the same for Putnam County, but the newspaper's request for records was denied because of the outrage the map had already caused in Westchester County.

That outrage was so intense the newspaper resorted to hiring armed security guards to man its headquarters after receiving multiple threats, The Rockland Country Times reported Tuesday.

The threats were reportedly so concerning, Journal News Rockland Editor Caryn McBride filed at least two reports with local police.

One reader decided to use a different tactic to express his anger at the newspaper.

After the map was published, incensed reader Christopher Fountain used his blog to release the name, home address, and phone number of the paper's publisher, editor, and the reporters behind the map.

Syrian rebels behead Christian man and feed his body to dogs (SUCK IT!)

Syria rebels 'beheaded a Christian and fed him to the dogs' as fears grow over Islamist atrocities

  • Christian Andrei Arbashe, 38, was kidnapped and beheaded by rebel fighters in northern town of Ras Al-Ayn on the Turkish border
  • News came as pro-government forces celebrated their victory against rebels near Aleppo Airport

By Nick Fagge
PUBLISHED: 19:41 EST, 30 December 2012 | UPDATED: 04:50 EST, 31 December 2012
Syrian rebels beheaded a Christian man and fed his body to dogs, according to a nun who says the West is ignoring atrocities committed by Islamic extremists.

The nun said taxi driver Andrei Arbashe, 38, was kidnapped after his brother was heard complaining that fighters against the ruling regime behaved like bandits.

She said his headless corpse was found by the side of the road, surrounded by hungry dogs. He had recently married and was soon to be a father.

Sister Agnes-Mariam de la Croix said: ‘His only crime was his brother criticized the rebels, accused them of acting like bandits, which is what they are.’

There have been a growing number of accounts of atrocities carried out by rogue elements of the Syrian Free Army, which opposes dictator Bashar al-Assad and is recognized by Britain and the West as the legitimate leadership.

Sister Agnes-Miriam, mother superior of the Monastery of St. James the Mutilated, has condemned Britain and the west for supporting the rebels despite growing evidence of human rights abuses. Murder, kidnapping, rape and robbery are becoming commonplace, she says.

‘The free and democratic world is supporting extremists,’ Sister Agnes-Miriam said from her sanctuary in Lebanon. ‘They want to impose Sharia Law and create an Islamic state in Syria.’

The 60-year-old Carmelite nun claims the west has turned a blind eye to growing evidence of a ‘fifth column’ of fanatics within the rag-tag ranks that make up the Free Syrian Army that they back to oust Assad.

One of the most effective fighting forces is the Jabat Al-Nusra, which has an ideology similar to Al Qaeda.

‘The uprising has been hijacked by Islamist mercenaries who are more interested in fighting a holy war than in changing the government,’ she said. ‘It has turned into a sectarian conflict. One in which Christians are paying a high price.’

The rebel attacked the northern town of Ras Al-Ayn, on the Turkish border, last month. The fighters entered the Christian quarter, ordering civilians to leave and leaving their homes.

‘More than 200 families were driven out in the night,’ Sister Agnes-Miriam says. ‘People are afraid. Everywhere the death squads stop civilians, abduct them and ask for ransom; sometimes they kill them.’

Militants wearing black bandanas of Al Qaeda recently laid siege to the Monastery of St. James the Mutilated, located between Damascus and Homs, for two days in an attempt to prevent Christmas celebrations, the nun claims.

An estimated 300,000 Christians have been displaced in the conflict, with 80,000 forced out of the Homs region alone, she claims.

Many have fled abroad raising fears that Syria’s Christian community may vanish — like others across Middle East, the birthplace of Christianity.

Al Assad, a member of the Alawite Muslim sect, claims only his regime can protect Syria’s minorities from domination from the Sunni Muslims majority.

Meanwhile, the fighting continues to rage, with government forces retaking control of a key district in the city of Homs yesterday.

The latest violence comes after United Nations peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi warned of ‘hell’ for Syria if no political solution could be found.

Russia has stated the conflict is becoming increasingly militarized and sectarian, and risks bringing chaos to the whole region.

Some 44,000 people have been killed since the uprising against the Al Assad regime began in March 2011.

Some have correctly compared this list of legal permit holders with the treatment of convicted sex offenders. However, if what the Journal News is doing it would seem those offenders may have more rights than gun permit holders.

The NY State sex offender site now no longer lets you search for Level 1 (least chance of reoffending) convicted offenders, though you can still find out if someone whose name you already know and you have another identifying characteristic is on the list if you call by phone.

DCJS is barred by law from posting information on Level 1 (low level) sex offenders, or those with a pending risk level, on this public site. However, while we cannot tell you if there are any Level 1 sex offenders or sex offenders with a pending risk level in your neighborhood or who they are, we can tell you if a particular individual is on the registry. Call us at 1-800-262-3257 with the name and at least one other identifier (an exact address, date of birth, driver's license number, or a social security number) and we will tell you if that individual is a registered sex offender in New York.

Furthermore, the site says (about all offenders):

The information in this Subdirectory must be used responsibly. Anyone who uses this information to harass or commit a criminal act against any person may be subject to criminal prosecution.

Let's remember this caution is about someone who has been convicted of committing a crime. Publishing someone's name and exact address with a name, no less, without specific cause certainly sounds like at least civil, if not criminal, harassment to me, and with the map an invitation for others to do the same.

What I don't get is why would anyone living in SCARSDALE or BRONXVILLE need to have a registered gun? I mean....lets face it...there are NOT high-crime areas. Yet when you look at the map, there are way to many in those places.

The REAL QUESTION here is why is it such a BIG MYSTERY for gun owners? they get a licence to have a gun, much in the same way someone get a drivers licence. What if the paper printed all the names of people with drivers licences? would people go NUTS over that too?

I'll guess because they feel they're targets for home invasions.

There are reasons to own a registered gun other than fear of crime. You might be in a business where you have to carry large amounts of cash, work in a facility apt to be robbed, do some kind of security work, or transport valuable equipment.

Will you ever find any time in your busy schedule to shop around for a new personality? eh?

So then move to the deep end of the forest then. Plus.....they pay enough in taxes to have a private police force to do the job of protection.

Let's not be ingenuous. Why would the newspaper WANT to print the names and addresses of everyone with driver licenses? How would you feel if they published the names and addresses of ALL sex offenders, although they would have at least have to file a FOIA for that, and then would almost certainly be sued by rights organizations and lawyers, as the state has already been.

Yup. Convenience store owners. Restaurants. Jewelry.

I have family members who shoot targets for sport. They have shotguns and shoot those big plates or something like that. They have had the guns for forty years.

Friends and family my age don't have guns(including friends and family in law enforcement) because they're wives won't allow guns in the home. I don't know why someone would become a cop and leave his gun at work. That's kind of sad.

Maybe you should see a shrink, instead of judging someone's life on a web forum, being a know-it-all! Because, that's all you're good at!
