Pre-GOH or Post-GOH?Pre-GOH: there were differences WITHIN the R32s - #3800-3949 had backlit advertising and different fans. This carried over to the R38 fleet. R38 had different louver patterns on the car ceiling. The lighting style that defined R38 carried over to R40 (non-A/C). There were different grilles on the ceilings as well as a non-continuous light bar down the car ceiling centre. Same fans as prototyped in the R32 #3800-3949. Also a small light in front of the ad panel over the storm doors. Post-GOH: Backlit advertising/ambient lighting. Curly bars. Grab bars by the doors. wayne |

The R38 and the handful or R32 cars overhauled by GE, the grab-bar bent down and around and ended next to the door rather than turning up to the ceiling as in the rest of the R32 cars. (The GE-overhauled R32 also had backlit advertising like the R38.) |

Made it easy to reach the bars standing near the doors. The R32s remaining have the higher bar which is tougher to reach (and I'm 5-10; must be really bad to reach for a short person). |

In addition to what others have said:The R38 windows were larger. The R38 floors never got replaced with the black n blue ones. Fewer vertical poles (IIRC, R38 had 6, R32 GE had 10, and regular R32 has 8). |

R38 interior (Platform) door vertical moldings were all stainless, as opposed to half stainless or aluminum add on covers which were typical on all NYCT equipment after the R17 order.Half the R32 GOH fleet was retrofitted with full length stainless interior door moldings, while the other half had none, and only with painted moldings. |

Don't forget the interior of the T/O (nee motorman) cab on the 38s.First changes in eons: flat console instead of individual stands for throttle and brake handles. Indication and brake gauge on the LEFT side, new style throttle for Westinghouse equipped units, throttle cover (green!) (and flat head instead of mushroom) for GE equipped units, electrically operated windshield wipers replacing manual ones. There's a pic at nycsubway.org that's labeled as an R32 cab, but the layout clearly is for an R38. |
