Posted by Neil Feldman on Sat Oct 30 23:02:41 2010 Tonight, I received word that there was a work train consist on the Calverton Spur which is in the process of being revived by New York, and Atlantic, so here I found the consist with MP15AC 155 on the south end. Please mind if there is a slight bit out of focus as it was totally pitch black on a Isolated public road, so I had to use the best of what I had since even the auto focus wasn't helping me at all either. I had to guess it right with manual focus, and edit the photo the the best I could.

Neil, the photo is way out of focus, not just a little. And a 30 second exposure with flash???? You don't use flash if you're doing an extended exposure! It's an either/or! Either flash or extended exposure! Unless you prayed for it to come out looking like some red stuff behind a big dark thing, I doubt this is how you hoped it would come out. Also, it's just a close up of an engine with no recognizable surroundings. What are we supposed to take away from this photo? That an engine was in front of some power lines and trees at night? I appreciate that you tried to capture a newsworthy event but the photo came out poorly and the photo does not tell a story. Keep on working at it though, you'll get it right with enough practice. |

For the little I understand about photography, it's a fair picture IMHO. I had to look at again to see the image, once it was pointed out it was an engine.It's easy to be critic, I appreciate everything on this forum, good ,bad or indifferent. I totally provided it, and yes, he usually asks for constructive criticism. The photo has SERIOUS problems and all the people here responding with "nice photo" are not doing a DAMN thing to help him correct those problems. People need to stop this politically correct SH*T and start helping the less fortunate TAKE BETTER PHOTOS! WTF is wrong with that? Fred G and I seem to be the only people man enough to actually tell Neil that his photos need a lot of work and are telling him how to go about that. Many of the rest of the photographers here must be so selfish that they want to protect their position as a decent photographer so they don't want to help others become as good as them. Disgusting. If Neil wants to come up to the Bronx, I will totally give him a couple hours of my time to help him take better photos. How many others here are willing to do that? |

As I said, I see them all the time.As for your feedback about the picture, I actually thought the picture came out pretty crappy -- grainy, lighting wasn't right, and the train was moving so it was blurry. I didn't even get the front of the train. And the reflection against the platform lighting prevents one from making out the train. And the number plate was overexposed, so not showing the #271 number. It's mostly crappy because (a) I had the camera in autofocus mode (b) I really wasn't paying attention and instead was wondering why the 20:33 Babylon still wasn't there and (c) I was distracted by the graffiti on the first unit. But since I see those all the time, it's not really even worth the effort to find a really good photo -- there was just way too many to go through. |

Brian, I know exactly what happened in my photo here! This was the best I could do in no light conditions. The area was totally dark, the engine was shut off, and with all of that, I couldn't see anything at all, so I had to use the best judgement here. Even if you said what you said, I know what I did wrong here. I did a daylight photo of it today and will post later on this thread! |
