R62/68 Rollsign Questions

2 Questions:

1) Do all R62/62A's feature forward rollsigns with numbers 1-14?
2) Are R62/68 forward rollsigns hand cranked or powered (like the R40/42)?

2) All of them including the R40 and R42 were hand cranked

1) No. Many rollsigns have numbers 1 through 13 and S. Some just have 1 through 7, 9, and S. I have not seen an R62 rollsign with a number higher than 13.

2) Yes, they are hand cranked. Interestingly, the R62 end rollsign scrolls horizontally and the R68 end rollsign scrolls vertically.

Whatever became of the R62 rollsign which had station stops at the bottom of the bullet? Were those produced in any number, or was that a one-off?

I have an R62 side sign box, bought 2 years ago from the TA and the numbers indeed only go as high as 13.

You mean this thing?

Never saw it in person, but since it also has the normal (1) reading, I doubt it would be easy to find.

The R110B rollsign was the only other one in recent history which has destinations on the same roll curtain, but only for the (A), (C), and (H) lines. The readings on this are:

(A)
(A) Far Rockaway via ✈ JFK Airport
(A) Lefferts Blvd
(C)
(C) Far Rockaway via ✈ JFK Airport
(C) Lefferts Blvd
(H)
(H) Rockaway Park
(H) Far Rockaway via ✈ JFK Airport
(H) Lefferts Blvd
(E)
(F)
(G)
(R)
<W>
(N)
(Q)
(B)
(D)
(Q)
(A)
(V)
(M)

Hmm, an (A) ! That would be interesting to see :)

207th-Coney Island? via 8th Ave local (at least south of 59th), Houston St, Manh. Bridge north, then your choice of Brighton, West End or Sea Beach.

Not according to this.

That R110B with the "Special" sign appears to have an R40/42/44/46 sign installed.

The R110B sign only used Helvetica. The sign in your pic appears to be using Akzidenz.

There's an interesting story behind the orange A.

From the Line-by-line history:
9-89 Asbestos Flood on 8th Av cuts A and C service. Q extended to 207th St via Central Pk West local, using some A line equipment, Non-weekdays, terminates at 2nd Av (Local on 6th Av) This would become the blueprint for future service cut proposals that were shot down because of the resulting loss of the legendary A express from Harlem (An orange "A" was placed on R-110B signs, and Brighton "A" destinations on R-44/46 signs to replace Q, but public still didn't buy it)

1) Main reason I thought there was a 14 was that I had a set of R62 route bullets files from a long time ago and 14 was one of them.

2) The R40/42 rollsign I have is not hand-cranked. Need to power the sign and use this switch on top of the sign box to make it scroll.

Very cool find...I'm guessing the TA gave up on this since it hasn't expanded beyond this trial.

Looks like the 1 readings were just an add on to the regular sign.

40s and 42s were handcrank before GOH. It was only after GOH they were powered.
