Oh wow, that IS a great photo....I remember when the R42's looked like that, they looked the BEST they have looked in their lives. It was around 1985 or so that they ran on the M train. This is when the M still ran via the Brighton to Coney Island. And look at the size of the windows in the storm doors! The side doors were just as deep if I remember....and BLUE!

Awesome picture. I remember riding R42s on the D back then as a kid. I wish they kept them looking like that after GOH, including the large storm door and side door windows.

Yup. They were best with those side doors and storm doors.

I remember one or two 42's always running on the M in the late 70's.

Yes, the M always had a few thrown in with it's R27-30's, etc. The M has had every type of the 60 foot cars on it, except for the R10's, I never saw that. But everything else from R16 up.

Yup. In fact, if you go back to that "South Bronx 80's" video posted a few weeks ago, you see a R27-30 pulling into the yard, next to an R32 while an R42 is entering Fresh Pond. That must have been a fun time to ride the M.

Not sure if the R-38s ever operated on the M (or any other line in the Eastern Division, for that matter). But I otherwise agree that all other 60-footers were represented, including Arnines

Neat pic. It's a shame rationalization came ahead of subway car aesthetic.

Somehow "rationalization" doesn't seem rational.

The Eastern Division used to get all of the old stuff- not that I'm complaining! except when they replaced the Standards with the painted up Arnines! They should have been kept in their original paint scheme.
