Encounter With PAT Bully At So. Hills Jct |
|
Posted by HarryP on Wed Jul 21 13:33:56 2010 I was in the Pittsburgh area on the Fourth Of July weekend. On the 2nd, I decided to railfan the PAT rail system. Now that I am a full-fledged Senile Citizen(LOL),I could now ride the system free.Early in the morning, I was out and about in the Allentown section and walked down Warrington Ave. towards the South Hills Jct. PAT station. I followed the pedestrian walkway along the north side of the street, next to the PAT busway, also used by the Rt. 52 trolley. When I got near the Junction, I paused at a pedestrian crosswalk and took a couple of shots at the junction looking towards the station. The specialwork is quite impressive and very photogenic! Just about then, I heard yelling from behind me. I turned around to see what the commotion was about and observed what appeared to be a PAT maintenance worker -- a burly 6' male who approached me and stated he "didn't think taking pictures was allowed." I informed him that to the best of my knowledge there was no prohibition. He became belligerent towards me and demanded my name, saying he was going to call the police and he wanted me to remain there until the police came. I told him that since I didn't know who he was, I was not about to give him my name. He stated, "I work here!" So I asked him for his name and employee number, and he replied, "I'm not giving you anything!" Since I had only a short time to spend railfanning and was on my way downtown, I left on the next inbound train, but before boarding I snapped a photo of him. Unfortunately, he turned away from the camera and said he was going to "sue me" for taking a picture of him. From the train window, I saw him with a cell phone in his hand, pointing at me and laughing. This so-called "employee" acted like a total idiot. I've been to Pittsburgh many times since the early 1960s and never had a problem with anybody. I just sent a letter to Mr. Stephen G. Bland, CEO of the Port Authority of Allegheny County, outlining the above incident. I will keep you posted on further developments. |

Congrats. When I visited Pittsburgh a few years ago one trolley operator gave me problems about taking photos. The other operators didn't give me any problems. |

Never let a lowly worker run his power trip on you. The incident was handled well and I hope you get results (not some form letter and free tickets). |

I raise you a female operator on the 52 who not only started calling me a terrorist, but tried (unsuccessfully) to summon the police (dispatch office wouldn't return her calls). I left her steaming at First Ave. |

Wasn't this on a public street? This wouldn't even seem to raise the issues associated with taking pictures on the property of a transit authority (although even there, the right of a publicly owned transit authority to limit picture taking, as we know, is doubtful). And the unbelievable assumption that this guy has the right to detain you until the police show up? Who gave this schmuck a badge? If anybody told me that on a public street I'd tell him to go f*ck himself. Glad you stood up to it. |

The incident took place on PAT property. Warrington Avenue just west of Haberman is the beginning of the PAT busway with the Rt. 52 trolley rails embedded in the pavement. The paved road is also used as an access road for PAT maintenance trucks and other vehicles. On the north side of the busway is a paved sidewalk, which enables customers and employees to gain access to the South Hills Jct. station platforms. At the bottom of the access road there is a crosswalk, which crosses the track. On the north end of the crosswalk is a very high pedestrian stairway, which enables people to walk up and down from the hilltop. On the other side of the crosswalk is a PAT maintenance parking lot.My encounter took place at that crosswalk, and the "PAT Bully" came out of the parking lot and confronted me. Even though it was not on a public street, the crosswalks are open to the public. To get a better view of the area, you can use Google Maps to search for "Warrington Ave. & Haberman Ave., Pittsburgh, PA." At one time, before the rebuilding in the 1980s, that area just off Haberman was a private right-of-way used by trolleys, and there was a material yard, which is now paved over and the structure is used for maintenance vehicles. If you look closely, you'll notice that during the rebuilding new rails were laid for access to the yard, but never used. |

Obviously the guy is still a jerk and it's inconceivable that you would have been violating the law (or any enforceable rules) taking a picture of something that is in plain sight. |

Since i mentioned "rules" and the other poster mentioned something else, thats just me though. |
