Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Mon Jun 28 20:05:51 2010 Finally folks, your friendly, neighborhood #1 Conductor had a good time frame this past Sunday in NH to check out the M-8 over at the Kawasaki Yard. And without further ado...... The M-8!!! Face to face!! Wheel trucks and third rail shoes...... MU coupler & compromise coupler....... Lightweight pantograph...... Since the interior was loaded with sandbags for load testing, there was not a whole lot to be seen inside, as I would have preferred to show off this awesome interior without any computer equipment, apparatus, blue plastic bag covers and sandbags cluttering things up. So I left those views alone until there is a time where this can be shown off as any of you who hopefully and luckily get to board it on its maiden run, will get to see it!! (Do allow me to leave a little something for your imaginations!! ;-)) Thank you for coming on this quick up-close tour of MNR's newest addition to the fleet, coming soon to the New Haven Line in the form of 300 cars. I look forward to taking these sweet looking machines down the road, and I hope they run every bit as good as they look!! Much respect to Kawasaki for the nice work as well!! :-) Thank you for viewing!! Hope you all enjoyed!! :-) |

I agree with Railman.Interesting that there is no sign of any equipment to change the position of the third rail shoes in these cars. I understand they may add it at a later point, but I would expect there to be at least a mounting bracket or something down there. And why does the pilot barely cover the gauge width? I realize the Reading RR's old cow catchers may be a bit anachronistic, but even the Silverliner V's pilot extends out a bit beyond the rail. And it looks like they have cutouts for third rail, so I can't imagine the MNRR's requirements are any different. |

I like how they look, and IMHO they look way better than the SLVs!!As for the pilots, I believe they are just to the same specs in size as the M-7/M-7A pilots. I have to check that in more detail the next time I am around the M-7As. They clear thru the snow well, but do keep in mind, the SLVs do not have to worry about clearing third rails with their plows, the M-8s do, much as all of our M-series do. |

As far as passenger service, no exact date has ever been told, but the word is that it will occur sometime towards the end of the year. However if you are night riding around the New Haven Line, look for them to do their test runs out on the NH Line pretty much nightly, however when and how long they are out, and how far they go on the runs are subject to constant change. |

I like how they look, and IMHO they look way better than the SLVs!!Pretty sure you're the only person I've heard express either opinion. The Silverliner Vs look like, well, railcars. In particular with a little red paint the SLVs would be dead ringers for slightly modified Cosmopolitan cars. The M8s have more in common with the MF2000, a new-gen VW Beetle, or a beercan-like Japanese EMU than the M2s, M4s and M6s. As for the pilots, I believe they are just to the same specs in size as the M-7/M-7A pilots. I have to check that in more detail the next time I am around the M-7As. Just checked photos from Croton a few years back, and yeah, they're almost identical in design, right down to the gap-toothed point at the front of the blade. They clear thru the snow well, but do keep in mind, the SLVs do not have to worry about clearing third rails with their plows, the M-8s do, much as all of our M-series do. The Silverliner V's pilot is designed to clear the third rail at NYP. It's in the technical specification. The SLV pilot looks more like the M1-6 pilot. But then I guess subway cars like the M7s and M8s don't need much in the way of snow removal cause they'll just stop running when the snow hits the third rail. I also notice there are no sanders on the M8s. The MTA added them to the M7s after their infamous wheelflat problems, so it'll be interesting to see if the M8s get them as well someday. |

AFAIK, those sanders were a trial. I have heard the ones on the LIRR have been removed on a few of the test pilot cars (though the S marker still remains on the cab body). AFAIK, those sanders were taken off MNR's few test cars as well. I will ask around and get confirmation on that.Interestingly enough, several M-7As here on MNR have the sander operating equipment and breaker programming logged into the computer system, yet no sander has been equipped, and it gives a false indication on the TOD that the sander circuit breaker has been tripped, though the breaker does not exist in the breaker panel. |
