Those are the same R-160s with the fold-up seats. They will be used as part of a test program in which those seats will be folded up and locked. Now that's gonna be crazy! |

I'm telling you...I rode on these cars and they ARE the ones with foldable seats. They are also equipped with steel straps, IIRC, the only cars in the NYCT fleet that have them nowadays... |

Those poles first originated inside the 1200 series buses. It's probably a good thing that they migrated to the subways, because additional hold spaces are needed. |

The idea is to get passengers away from the door and into the center of the car. This way riding passengers will not interfere with passengers entering and leaving the cars. Therefore, the MTA designers have placed the poles near the doorways so that standees will grab onto them and not venture further into the car. If the new pole design allows for more standees, then the path to the doorways will be further blocked. |

That's not the only experimental R-160 out there. 8713, with the fold-up seats, also has an experimental, ergonomic master controller.... |

Too small a pole---and if it were to happen already, it would have happened on the 1200-series buses, which have the same poles in the center. |

I guess it's a personal preference. I find it more relaxing to stare at the doors than the person across from me. When the R32's ruled Jamaica the first seats to be taken at Parsons/Archer where always the seats opposite the doors. |

I believe there are only one or two five car R160 sets that have those experimental poles. There isn't really a reason to put the original ones back. |
