CTA AC5000s Have Left The Red Line (Photos) |
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Thu May 20 19:26:44 2010 The Bombardier AC5000s finished their scheduled four week stint on the Red line last week and this week moved on to their next stomping ground, the CTA Green line. Small problems occurred...most serious is the raising up and down to match platform heights. One car did get tagged, but was promptly cleaned up. There seems to be a definite effort to keep the logoed cars on the end of the consist. Here's my photo roundup of the four weeks. The brightest item seen is the red contact cover....the diaper...painted bright red as a reminder to switchmen and operators that the AC5000s are not to be electrically coupled to any other high performance cars. The eight car Red line train is just leaving the 63rd ST station. The eight car train lays up in the Howard ST yard seen here looking north from the platforms. The logoed cars are on the other end as the eight car train pulls out of Howard ST yard. The line instructor did both the pullin and pullout moves. The instructor accompanies the regular operator and is there to give additional instructions and to aid in troubleshooting. The test consist is racing northbound in the median of the Dan Ryan at 33rd ST. At this point the expressway is 16 lanes wide. Southbound meets northbound on the sweeping curve at Marquette RD. The highway ramps in the background lead to the Skyway. The other end of the sweeping curve that ends at Marquette RD (6700 S.) is shown here, just south of 63rd ST. If ever 70 MPH operation is approved, what a thrill riding this curve will be. The elevated in the background is the 103 year old Englewood branch. Interior shots of the cab showing the computer display panel. David Harrison |

My aunt rode on the 5000s several times during the past few weeks and didn't care to much for them. Something about the longitudinal seats... |

Let me guess - you were standing on the Marquette Rd. viaduct when you snapped that pic of the two trains with the Skyway ramp behind them. We used to take Marquette Rd. to State St. to the Skyway a lot when going home to South Bend. |
