The E runs at 4-minute headways. Even if you knew the schedule and your watch were synchronized with NYCT's clocks, you couldn't possibly be certain that the train that you thought was scheduled to go to 179th wasn't actually its leader or its follower. Or perhaps its leader was pulled from service so your train is rerouted to Jamaica Center (which has no other service from the IND, unlike 179th, which has primarily the F).

Waiting at 179th for an E is stupid unless you have lots of time on your hands. Take whatever comes first and transfer if necessary.

Two of the four northbound E trains to 179th are scheduled to be put-ins from the yard on their previous southbound trips. I don't know why they're not signed properly in the yard before entering service for the afternoon.

Perhaps reality doesn't stick to the schedule and often the other train at WTC (which has two tracks) is sent out in its stead.

And you're going to draw a diagram when some random tourist taps you on the shoulder and asks you how to get to Port Authority as your train is pulling in? Most of us simply give the letters or numbers. The more there are, the more likely the tourist is to lose track or get confused.

Much of the so-called 8th Avenue line is nowhere near 8th Avenue.

"And you're going to draw a diagram when some random tourist taps you on the shoulder"

I guess you've never seen diagrams on walls, have you? The graphic arts department makes them up, and the stations dept. mounts them in prominent places in the station.

See how simple that is? Now run along and eat a cookie.

And if I wait for one to go home to 179 St, I shouldn't have to transfer when I find out I'm on the wrong train.

LION thinks you are full of beans.
Hot, Used Beans!

You take the first train that will get you out of Manhattan in the direction and line of your choice, and then you can transfer to an (F) for example if you want 179th Street.

Sheesh! If you are in Manhattan and must have 179th Street, and are unwilling to change trains, then just walk over to 6th Avenue instead of going to 8th Avenue. End of Problem.

LION SAYS: Subway is designed to get you to work and back as easy as possible, but ALWAYS presumes that most people will have to change trains at least once.

8 was supposedly reserved for the diamond 6.
10 was supposedly for the diamond 5.
but now since the diamond is pebig specifically reserved for express versions of routes with the same terminals, the diamond 6 is what stays. (And someone else said, the 10 may not fit in the digital signs).

All the more proves it would be better to go with Jabbour's individual route style, with my idea of different style lines (hollow, dashed, etc) to denote part time services.
