PHOTOS : Still in Queens, Still lovin' the LIRR!! |
|
Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Sat Feb 13 21:54:26 2010 I had that railfan itch, and I hadn't scratched it good enough yet!! So we move onto 2 other LIRR locations, seldom railfanned and photographed!! T.M.P. takes care of ya'!!! Here we go......St. Albans...... The mural, which has been for quite some time downstairs under the girder span on Linden Blvd, south side...... ![]() ![]() CHOO CHOO!! ![]() ![]() ![]() North side...... ![]() ![]() ![]() Now you know what happens next!! We go UPSTAIRS!!! :-D Where we find a station once a royal garbage dump now a very respectable station...... ![]() ![]() ![]() Ahhhhhh, sneaky little scraven, ain't ya'??? :-D ![]() ![]() Buh bye!! ![]() Since it got a tee bit cold here, we head downstairs, where we are greeted by an RTS!! (For the bus lover in you all!!) ![]() ![]() But don't look now, the LIRR wants to bid us a farewell!! ![]() ![]() Now, our last stop (no pun intended), Locust Manor, next to warm, sunny, beautiful "Roachdale" (Oops, my bad!!), Rochdale Village...... ![]() ![]() Locust Manor is need of some TLC from the LIRR...... ![]() Damn vandal scum!!! >:-( ![]() Uh oh!! The headlights....the increasing roar (no, not the LION!!), the rumbling in the ground......IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT'S TRAIN TIME!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And now, after adequately freezin' my balls off, we leave Locust Manor as..... A Quantas Airways Boeing 747-400, "SPIRIT OF AUSTRALIA", arrives at JFK inbound to Runway 22L (TWO-TWO-LEFT)...... ![]() And we get to see what the LIRR does not allow people to do while at Locust Manor...... NO BRAINER!! ![]() Geez, good thing they didn't add railfanning and photography!! :-D ![]() That's all folks!!! Thanks for viewing!! Hope you all enjoyed!! :-) |

Nice photos. Believe it or not Locust Manor looks much cleaner now than it did years ago, it looks like the LIRR replaced the heavily vandalized windows that protected the shelter. |

You were just blocks from my house in St. Albans. If I'd known you were coming, I'd have made Metrocard cookies and brought them out to you...LOL! Excellent pics.BTW, St. Albans only got its rehab after YEARS of local pleas to fix up the station. Although the LIRR considers it a "low volume" station, trains from both the West Hempstead and Babylon lines stop there, and local pols know that allowing the LIRR to close this station would be political suicide. You seriously have to let me know when you're in my neck of da woods...LOL! |

Thanks, J!!! Sounds like a plan next time!! I did have this planned because with all the photos throughout the storm period, all except the LIRR have been showcased, so the LIRR needed some time in the limelight!!And definitely next time I go fannin' in Queens, I'll drop you an email!! Always cool to meet more Subchatters!!! :-) As for St. Albans, I remember the holes in the platforms, and vandalism, it was a royal dump. Now, it became a really good looking station. |

Why thank you good sir!! Having grew up only 5-10 minutes away from here, I lived around the trains and the planes, from Alcos on the LIRR to the M-7s and DE/DM, and from 707s, Concordes and DC-8s at JFK to A340, A380, 747-400s and even Stealths, C-5s and an AWACS. |

I remember Locust Manor when it had more platform lights on the railing posts instead of up on the high masts (the station was actually brighter then), but the structure itself was indeed a dump. It had been improved, but still needs some TLC. As you can see, it has a very A Line, Rockaways feel (just with the glass partitions)!! (Of course the A in the Rockaways being ex-LIRR)![]() ![]() Thanks for the compliments, man!! :-) |

Yes those are great planes. I love the Concorde. I got to once peek into it. I was waiting for a United flight at JFK which also had an area for British Airways and I was standing at the window where BA had a Concorde. One of the BA Pilots saw me admiring it and asked me if I'd like to peek inside it. It was amazing of course this was pre-9/11. Sad they are no longer in service |

I always went to what is now the US Customs parking lot at JFK, and always at, whenever I could, at 2:00PM, with a southwest, west or southerly wind blowing because JFK would then decide to use the 22s (Runways 22R, two-two-right, for departures and Runway 22L, two-two-left, for arrivals). The Concorde, British Airways Flight 004, or "SPEEDBIRD 4", would taxi on the C Taxiway (Taxiway "Charlie") and then loop onto the threshold for 22R, and at exactly 2PM, the afterburner cranks, everything shudders and rumbles, every car alarm for MILES goes off, and way down the runway she rockets, and at a takeoff speed of 225 MPH, she is airborne, right over Jamaica Bay, The Rockaways, then a left turn towards the east then to the north, and even long after it clears JFK airspace, you could STILL hear it soaring away. I used to listen on the scanner at the same time.....JFK Tower (119.100 MHz) : SPEEDBIRD 4, RUNWAY 2-2-RIGHT, TAXI INTO POSITION AND HOLD!! Speedbird 4 : (In typical English drawl) INTO POSITION AND HOLD, 2-2-RIGHT, SPEEDBIRD 4 (At 1400 SHARP)....... JFK Tower : SPEEDBIRD 4, RUNWAY 2-2-RIGHT, WIND 1-2-0-AT-8, CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF!! Speedbird 4: SPEEDBIRD 4, 2-2-RIGHT, CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF, ROLLING..... And with the thunder of the heavens, she is away!!!! JFK Tower : SPEEDBIRD 4, CONTACT NEW YORK DEPARTURE, 1-3-5-POINT-9'ER!! GOOD DAY!! Speedbird 4 : GOING TO DEPARTURE 1-3-5-POINT-9-ER, GOOD DAY!! Ahhhh, the good ol' days!! I do indeed miss that bird!! :-) |

Here is a sweet reminder of what was (PUMP THE VOLUME!! If you have a surround sound system hooked up, you will get an idea of what it is like to catch this plane up close the way I did a lot!! And believe me, I had my ears covered with hearing protection the whole time!!! It is A MUST when next to any aircraft, but especially one with an afterburner!!)'NUFF SAID!!! :-) Note: This was NOT taken at JFK, but somewhere in England, not sure if this was Heathrow. |

Beautiful bird, but the noise?? off the scale as they say. They were noisy even on landings. I remember standing on the Westbury Penn Sta bound platform waiting on a westbound in the afternoon twilight & here comes a Concord lining up final approach to JFK, gliding at about 1000ft or so (a guess) crossing the tracks just west of the platform. The sound would go right thru you, vibrating every bone in u r body. Its true, sometimes you don't know what you've got till its gone. |

I can believe it, but the plane would have had a long takeoff roll for it to be able to do that. Maybe the vibration made 'em come off, because anything else and they would have lost windows with the lids!! lolI remember always seeing it go off whenever I was home at them times, and even used to go out to the airport by Runway 22R to see it up close, it was an amazing piece of craftsmanship!! When I saw it displayed at the Interpid, I thought that was the saddest sight in the world, for a plane to be grounded like that when its only place is the sky!! |

At Westbury, it would between 3,000 and 3,500 feet. That would be the approach course to Runway 22L (2-2-LEFT) and also 22R (2-2-RIGHT), under VOR-DME approach.
