It would instantly make the 'V' undesirable for Queens Blvd riders already packed into trains. Also it's terminals would be too near each other. And it's not going to Canarsie either because this ain't gonna happen in any variation using the Chrystie connection. The Chrystie connection will probably never see revenue service for a very long time if ever. It was an expensive mistake of transit planning. |

It was an expensive mistake of transit planning. In their defense, the trend toward Midtown and the decline of Downtown as destinations were well known; the 6 Av Line goes through the heart of Midtown. If anything, the problem was that platform lengthening wasn't a part of the program, nor was taking care of the terminal issue at Middle Village. They also knew - and it is still true, I think - that of transit's East River crossings, trains over the Williamsburg Br are the lightest loaded. Also it's terminals would be too near each other. Given that on most lines, terminal-to-terminal travel is pretty light (although there are exceptions to this, especially on shorter ones like the Flushing Line), I don't view that as a defect. E.g., you can travel from Jamaica Estates to Flushing by subway, but the bus is generally quicker because of the circuitous rail route used. |

Zman reports the potential (M) elimination/ (V) replacement/extension wouldn't likely occur until Summer following the (W) and (Z) likely occurring in Spring if the Doomsday Plan goes through. The (V) would have to become eight car sets of R32 Brightliners or R160s, sending the R46s to other lines and the (V), likely, will become the Metropolitan Avenue-Myrtle Avenue Shuttle late nights and weekends. Possibly no more (W) (Z) and (M) and possibly a 24/7 (V) with partial service (6am-11pm) via the Chrystie Street Connector. |

In all likelihood, if the service were to be combined, the "M" designation will probably be retained and the "V" designation dropped. As I mentioned in several other posts, I think it would be better if the V were extended to Jamaica Center to replace the Z and the M left alone. The recent threatened MTA service cuts may however preclude this. |

The real problem here is that there are not enough R160's to do it. An M-V combo would HAVE to be equipped 100% with R160 4-car sets, and even with the upcoming option order, I don't think enough exist to do so. They're not gonna keep the older cars around any longer than they have to. |

I don't know if this is anything more than a pipe dream, but it was said all along, that the M/V combo would actually be a cost SAVING measure, as opposed to something that would cost money. It would save equipment, it would take a like that dead ends in Manhattan, and connected to a severed line at Essex St. The M isn't needed on Nassau St really. |

There isn't really a shortage though. What about all the M trains that are out there from Essex St to Bay Parkway, which would then be able to go towards the new M/V combo line? That has to be a bunch of trainsets. You don't need new cars. In fact, you will have left over cars. The V line is intact, it dead ends one station later than Broadway-Lafayette anyway. The M is complete from Essex to Metropolitan. You have all the left over trains that are between Essex and Bay Parkway. |

I don't think so though. While I like the M letter better, the new service would be an orange service, not a brown service, as it would be a 6th Ave train, not a Nassau service. The orange V could remain all along the line, and they would just have to add the orange V to the Broadway el and Myrtle stations. The brown M would be the wrong color, so it would have to be an orange M, not a brown M, and it would have to be changed at every single station along both segments. |

Correct, while a more convenient ride for many, it would be a cut, and save money. Between the 480 foot train on 6th Ave and Queens Blvd, and then only the J/Z on Nassau, all those trains left over too for the M south of Essex. But Queens Blvd was fine when it had only one Manhattan local....it's still way ahead of that with a 480 foot V....not only did the G not go to Manhattan, it also was only 4 75 foot cars. |

In non-rush, the EE stayed at 8 cars, the G went to 4 cars (60' or 75') and the N was either 8 cars of 60' or 8 cars of 75-ers. |
