They debuted on the E or F out of Jamaica, I believe. Not sure which line got the cars first. Would've been interesting to see them do one last trip out there on Queens Boulevard before retiring them.

The L also got R143s new (today, they have exclusive use of the fleet).

I used to hate when they mixed car classes like that. Was it because so many cars were being serviced that they would grab anything available to make a train?

I would suspect that was because there were not enough new cars to make up a train of entirely new cars at that point OR (and especially with the R42s when they were new) wanting to have trains where at least some of the cars were air conditioned, which was still new circa 1969-'70.

I rode my first R-46 in 1976! I picked it up @ 4th Avenue. It was awesome. I imediately noticed the slightly different front and side roll signs. The door chime sounded different and there were two seats instead of three near the front door. Finally the front door was significantly different. THat was a thrill. I remember it like yesterday.
