PHOTOS: San Francisco to LA Sept 3 |

Posted by chuchubob on Sat Sep 12 22:19:43 2009 While most Caltrain trainsets consist of an F40PH-2 and gallery cars, I rode an MP36PH-3S and Bombardier cars from San Francisco to San Jose. I asked the engineer whether he preferred the new MP36 over the elderly F40's, and he said that both had their plusses and minuses, and that he had no preference. The Bombardier cars are trilevels, similar to the NJ Transit trilevel Bombardier Multi-Levels. I asked the engineer whether they had a name, and he said that they simply call them "Bombs", for Bombardier. I subsequently asked the assistant conductor who checked my ticket, and she said they simply call them "Bomberdeers" San Jose train 11 Coast Starlight PV Silver Foot was on the rear view from the rear of the last Superliner coach Pacific Parlor Car Sonoma Valley photographed at Salinas Silver Foot at Salinas and San Luis Obispo long station stop at SLO (arrived early plus crew change) transition sleeper 39019 No further photos, since subsequent station stops were during dinner in the dining car and subsequently after dark. The Metrorail Red Line subway took me from Union Station to the Wilshire Grand hotel, across the street from the 7th Street/Metro Center station. |

I especially like the interior pics of the Caltrans trains - love how they have tables and inward-facing seats. NJT should have a set up like that, but then again seats are at a premium on their trains. |

I like how leisurely the commuter cars are laid out, seatwise. They look more like a vacation train than a commuter ride.your pal, Fred |

I like how leisurely the commuter cars are laid out, seatwise.Admittedly, it's one of the things I miss about Caltrain. The BBD Bi-levels are rather comfortable, and the tables are a nice touch... |

On the next to last pic, I guess the Red/Purple line trains no longer relay south of Union Station, as they were the last time I was there (granted that was 10 years ago). |
