I remember a few R38s having some cranks on their roll signs left over too. Why did some R32/38 cars have them left on while the majority had them taken out? I always wondered that. |

I saw the train again today 2 hours later heading northbound at 145 street. It left at 4:46pm. It's probably still on the road. Also: I have a question. When the MTA prepares trains for scrap, do they they keep all of the roll signs and sell them or do they throw out some? Is there any way a non-MTA employee could get access to where ever their garbage goes so that they could be salvaged by people like us who care about them? |

I wouldn't term that type of sign as a "crank" roll sign but rather a "knob" or "X handle" roll sign even though the handles are not true knobs like the R-16s and 17s. A "crank" roll sign would be like the R-9s through 15s which actually had a crank rather than a knob or X handle. |

No, the side signs on the R-1/9s were backlit in white. I remember seeing backlit signs in 1967 and 1968, but not afterwards. Kev says he still saw them when he operated the R-1/9s on the D in 1970-71. |

What do you want to do, pull another Crappy Mc Crappers and steal one out of a train in service? This ain't like the old days. If you search the MTA web site, there is a link someplace and it's called "Asset Recovery". They sell them and other stuff. This is 2009, this ain't back in the day, nothing is for free anymore. If they can make a buck off it, they sell it, if they can't they throw it away ("burn it" so nobody gets it), but they are giving NOTHING away for free anymore! |
