Steroids are pervasive in baseball.In baseball, if you don't measure up, you go from making high six figures or low seven figures back to the minor leagues where you are basically just a working stiff. So the pressure to keep up and keep out of the farm teams is enormous. I remember Willie Mays' description of farm team action. Back in his day, major league players didn't make even close to what they make today. In football, the minimum union salary is about $275,000 if I recall correctly. You get paid that whether or not you play, as long as you are eligible to play and you suit up for a game. But the stars, a relatively small number of players, make seven figures per year. So they abuse steroids. There's no stigma. Hell, if, years later, you get "outed" for injecting, you figure, "What the f--k. They might put the dealer in jail but nobody's taking my house and limousines and investments." Ends justify means in their minds. |

Much appreciated, thanks.Of course, no Yankee fan that I know recalls the era(s) of the Yankees sucking it up, 1965-1977, and 1982-1994. Those are some BIG dry spells where the team rarely contended, attendance dropped considerably, and the team lacked major star power. The biggest story in the 70s with the Yankees was the wife swap between Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich. You also have to stop including the pre-free agency era in the comparison of ANY two teams. Prior to free agency, you either played for the team that signed you, or you DID NOT PLAY. The teams OWNED the players. It's why Jackie Robison retired. The 1951 Dodgers and the 1995 Angels blew bigger leads to not make the playoffs; but again, 1951 is pre-free agency. Oh, and as far as the Yankees being the only team in the major sports to blow a 3-0 lead in a best of seven, the 1975 Pittsburgh Penguins did it to the Islanders. |
