Jamaica Van Wyck (E) Question

After a shuttle bus ride on the J, I ended up sitting in the "bucket" seats at this E train station and found myself looking up to see above the Manhattan-bound track little railings as if one could stand up there and look down into the station, but right behind those railings was the station wall. I'm wondering if that wall was once open and people off the street could actually look down into the station (something like Newkirk Ave, on a smaller scale). If not, any explanation for why there would be nice sightseeing-like bars up there near the ceiling?

That's probably the part of the station that once had windows facing the Van Wyck Expressway. It was done to let light into the station, but it was undone because the windows were constantly being broken by vandals.

It's a shame. Here's what the station looked like originally:



The railings may have been there to allow maintenance people to clean the windows. The windows faced the Van Wyck Expressway so there never was any pedestrian access.

Didn't they cover up the windows because of vandalism and/or lack of maintenance? It looks so dark now.

Great photo BTW, JVW was always the best-looking of the Archer Avenue stations, and the one that has held up the most to this day.
