The "Infamous" Wilson Ave Station |
|
Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Sun Feb 8 14:40:57 2009 Someone writes about her good and bad experiences in the Wilson Ave Station: http://bushwickbk.com/2009/01/22/the-many-fitting-adjectives-for-the-wilson-l-stop/ Hahaha. While this story got my attention early on in the piece, I don't think I laughed as hard as this in a while when I got to about the 7th paragraph. LMAO!!! I would copy and paste the paragraph of her experience here, but it's probably funnier if you just get to that naturally by reading the article..... |

The Wilson Av Station was very infamous in a very tragic way, much different than the humorous paragraphs in this story. On Sept 21, 1983, the first female police officer in NYC history to be killed in the line of duty was killed in an incident that started in the Wilson Avenue Station. While on plainclothes patrol with District 33 of the Transit Police Dept she saw a perp, Darryl Jeter (no relation to Derek that I know of) snatch a chain and jump off a train at Wilson. She chased him into the cemetery where a struggle ensued, the perp took her gun and shot her dead. According to the perp's own confession, he made her get on her knees and beg for her life before shooting her. The only other NYC female P.O. killed was Moira on 9-11.I remember the incident well. When she failed to report to Dist. 33 to sign out a city wide missing was put over the police radios. I was working out of the 73 in Brownsville at the time and took part in the search. A year later I took part in the ceremony at District 33 to put the plaque in the station house. (The station house was not yet in Bway Junc station yet, it was a separate building. http://www.odmp.org/officer/8301-police-officer-irma-lozada (note: the details in the link are not accurate, she was found in the cemetery, not a parking lot and she didn't split up with her partner after the chase started, they went their seperate ways earlier and she was working alone.) |

Actually, the story I heard was that she got separated from her partner, and she did not have a radio. When the perp resisted being handcuffed and went for her gun, she had no way to call for help. |

It's not sexist, it's realistic. |

According to several sources and Jeter's appeal, she was with her partner and they split up during the chase. He didn't end up going to jail until 1998. She was also married to a guy who left her right after they married. She supposedly loved him and he just wanted to be legal. She even named him as her beneficiary although he never tried to collect. Her family ended up on welfare not knowing that they could have gotten the pension. |

Although the only person that knows for sure is the partner the story that I heard spread throughout the Department was that they split up earlier in the day with him taking advantage of their plain clothes to take care of business. She stayed on the train because of her dedication. That makes sense because they didn't ever start a search until she never showed up at the end of her tour. If the partner knew about the chase he would have reported it immediately. I even heard unconfirmed rumors that he was beat up in the District 33 locker room.I never heard about the thing about her marriage. If that was true her family couldn't collect al all, the beneficiary is in stone. Your sources might have been confused with another female PO that was killed off duty on a date with her body found in a lot at Kennedy Airport. Supposedly she listed an old boyfriend as a beneficiary and he ended up getting everything. As far as him not going to jail until 1998 are you sure? I thought he was held from his arrest with no bail. Whatever the story, I was at the ceremony where a plaque was unvieled and hung at District 33. I saw her whole family walking in dressed up and it was very sad. |

Here's where I read about her marriage, pension, and family.I had meant to delete that "1998" sentence. His original conviction was upheld in 1998, but he was already in jail as you point out. |
