I would like to thank everyone that took pictures of the Grand Opening ceremonies and of the trains in service in the days following the opening as well as the people that have provided their observations and opinions in writing. I just returned to Phoenix a few days ago (I left on the very first day of light rail service).I just went through all the posts related to the METRO so I can catch up on what has been going on. Since I do not want to spend my time replying to everyone's comments that I would like to reply to, I hope I can put my comments in this one place. So far I have only been able to ride the METRO once (when I was coming back home from the airport). But, it was a very nice ride. What I am most interested to see is that regular people are walking in and out of the trains. After having been away from Phoenix for a few weeks, it feels as though I missed something. To me, METRO Light Rail has only been a system that was tested. Seeing people waiting on the stations and riding the train just looks weird. It will take a while to get used to this. Another thing I am surprised to see is how empty the trains and stations are. The one time I rode the train, I was surprised at how empty the train was (but I am sure that they are more full during rush hour). Every time I see a station, there is almost no one on it. I do not know if this is because the system is not being used as much or because the high frequencies mean the stations do not have enough time to fill up. I do not like the announcements. I would rather have a recording of a real voice than a computer (it makes the system sound more life-like and personal). I will also echo the comments about the need for announcements about connecting bus routes (this would tell many first-time transit users about the opportunity to get around the Valley without their car). Of course, I am not as acquainted with the system as I should be. Once I ride it more will my opinions and thought become more solidified as well as change. So today I decided to ride the METRO the full length for the first time, both ways.I rode in car 102 from the Sycamore Transit Center to the Montebello Transit Center (102 was the first car and 103 was the second car of the train). It departed the station at 8:05 AM and arrived at Montebello at 9:12 AM. I rode in car 140 (also the first car of the train) from Montebello to Sycamore. This trip started at 9:40 AM and ended at 10:50 AM. I was very pleased with the acceleration of the trains. The start is smooth and you can barely notice how fast you are going. But I do not like the braking. I feel that the trains stop too abruptly. This was more the case with the first train as the second driver seemed to stop more smoothly (or I just got used to it). Again, the trains were not crowded. I am not sure whether this is because no one is using it, or just because it was a holiday (Martin Luther King Jr. Day) and many people did not work. The first train was clearly filled with professionals who were going to work. The second train was more of the "sightseeing" crowd. There were groups of people and several children. Some people clearly had a destination, but others were probably checking out the trains (like myself). Since Phoenix was just introduced to rail (and for many people, they were just introduced to public transportation), it will be a while before they get the hang of transportation etiquette. Several people brought their strollers on without folding them prior to boarding. Children were leaning against the sides of the train, as well as sitting cross-legged on the seats. But overall, it seems like a great system! I hope this will not only help public transportation in Phoenix but revitalize many areas along the line as well as help Downtown Phoenix grow to a vital urban center. |

I also can't get over the fact of how much I love this system, and even the announcements :).The trains are pretty crowded on the weekends, but on a weekday, you will only notice the crowds during rush hours (when the downtown phoenix crowds go to/from work, who would normally be driving their plastic...ahem, I mean car, that day to work)...and thanks to Maricopa County's Trip Reduction laws, A lot of people are taking advantage of the train to comply with the Trip Reduction law. |
