I'll be there, but not next weekend. Something called the Arnine Phenomenon...

Actually, I'll be visiting Phoenix on January 15, 16 and 17. Is that close enough? :)

I think that I'll be there in March or so. I don't plan on making a special trip so that'll have to do for me.

I am so excited! I cannot wait!

I really hope it does not rain (rain is expected later this week). Projections are for crowded trains and long lines. But if it rains, they say Grand Opening ridership will fall far below projections.

I sadly will not be in Phoenix for this historic event. I am leaving just a few hours before the first trains start running.

I have been waiting for this day for several years and I will not even be able to witness it. I hope your pictures turn out wonderful so that I can experience the first few days of service as best as possible.

I hope your stay in Phoenix goes well!

Gotta specify. "Valley Metro" also refers to the bus operations in Phoenix. Only cost $70 million per mile to build this system, too, up from $52 million per mile ($60.3 million adjusted for inflation) back in 2003.

Maybe you misunderstood.

If you take the METRO all the way to the Sycamore Transit Center (the eastern terminus) or to the 19th Avenue/Montebello Station (the western terminus) you will be asked to get off the train. You will then have to wait for the next train to head back.

There will be buses if the trains get too crowded so that people can get back to their cars when they have finished checking out the new system.

And, your map is incorrect (just two minor errors).
Just north of the Salt River there is supposed to be the Washington Street/Center Parkway Station. Originally, this station did not exist. But residents wanted them to add a station. They were told that if they were able to raise the money themselves, then they would build it. Some local business across the street helped out and in the end the station was built.
Second, the eastern terminus is not at Longmore. The last station is actually at Main Street and Sycamore Street (just 0.25 miles west of Longmore).

You will be required to get off whenever the train reaches an end-of-the-line station. So, when the train reaches both the Sycamore and Montebello stations, all people on the train will have to get off. Passengers waiting at the station will then have an opportunity to get on. The passengers that just got off the train will have to wait for the next train to head in the other direction.

The reason for this forced disembarkment is to allow everyone a chance to ride the train at least once. If the trains are too packed, and if people only ride the trains and do not get off at the stations then some people will not even be allowed to step onto the train. This forced disembarkment is just a way to make sure no one is left out.

I hope that makes sense.

I bet that they will do something like I remember seeing on Jon Bell's pics of the opening of the Charlotte light rail. Instead of waiting on the platform they'll have new riders line up just off the platform. Then riders that exit have to get back at the end of the line to go back. Otherwise if they have riders waiting on the platform I don't see what would stop some people from getting right back on.

It looked like a nice system when I was there a few months ago. My only complaint was that the stations all looked pretty much the same.

They all look almost exactly the same. Pretty much doesn't even cut it.

What's wrong with looking the same? Probably saved money on materials and labor. If and when they build extensions, then I'd hope they switch things up a little bit.

Do they at least have some unique artwork at each station like NYCT and HBLR and I assume others as well?

Don't plan on spending more than an hour at a station if you're snapping photos. (Page 2, Rule 9)
