Pencil in the first 10 cars for testing in 2009. Any particular item or you just want to ride in one. Or are you trying to figure out how long the 2200s will be around.

It looks like a 3200 series, except it'll probably have bowling alley seating.

And...without the manual pin setters. I think there may be one such alley in the city.

Here's an artist drawing, from the CTA I believe. For comparison here's a 3200 wrapped in honor of the then Championship Chicago White Sox, on a charter at 63/Ashland on the Green line.

CTA is sticking to its accepted design lines, except for the interior seating. The 5000s also mark the third fleet nonconformity in the CTA history. In the 1950s, the PCCs could not train with the 4000s or the wood steels. Then in the 60s came the high performance cars that could not train with the PCCs. Now comes the 5000s which cannot train with the high performance cars.

You would have thunk the CTA would have stuck with flexibility. Or is this new technology?

KNEEEEW technology. AC propulsion...but still 600 v DC third rail. They even had to strengthen the cab signal systems installed early on to combat interference. Newer installations are more compatible.

Cars should be referred to as the "new" 5000 series...

The original 5000 series, though consisting of only 4 units, were the articulated cars 5001-5004. They were renumbered 51-54 when they went to the Skokie Swift...

Ya gotta take that up with the CTA. They might have concluded that since they didn't order them originally...I think they just approved them...that the 5000 series is new. There were other number series that were repeated...CRT numbers repeated by the CTA and "new" was never mentioned. And besides railfans, 99.94 percent of present "L" employees don't know what the 5000s were either. Truthfully, the 5000s were never liked very much...real oddballs and only when they found a home on the Skokie Swift, did they become appreciated. Man how many 20 plus years did they call the Skokie home??? Gotta look that up for a lecture in November.

But what tech do the current cars use? Cam propulsion with resistors, or chopper controls?

Or are some cars resistor controlled, and others, cam controlled?

I don't know. Such things don't interest me. Study the history; know how they function from an operator's view; try to understand the ramifications of future projects. I'm especially uninterested in former, retired cars for those cars ain't coming back no way whatsoever, so you won't hear me delving into those subjects.
