Oh, I think you are right, but this isn't the first collision between UP and metrolink.I will give NJT credit for that though, they have an excellent safety record, and some of their lines run freight too, correct? I even remember seeing a freight train on the NEC...WITH FLATS. |

Another reason to take LADOT Commuter Express instead...What is it about Metrolink that causes all these crashes? There are plenty of similar commuter railroad systems in this country that have nowhere near as many casualties. It's really a shame. |

The Metrolink engine collided with the UP engine. The Metrolink engine and one car appeared to have derailed. Several of the UP cars derailed. They're not sure which train was in motion or if both were. The car that they are still pulling people out of was on fire a half hour ago.BTW the LAPD is on citywide tactical alert. That means that the police on duty can't leave even when their relief shows up. That's the type of stuff that they do when there's a riot or potential terrorist attack. Although no one is suggesting terrorism since it looks like a terrible accident. |

They don't know which train was moving or if they both were. It looks like it was on a single track so one of the trains was where it shouldn't have been. That would lead me to believe that both were moving, since they both thought that they had the ROW. |

Currently listening to KNX 1070. They're talking about the constatnt Metrolink push-pull controversy, and they say that they don't know whether the train involved was in push mode or pull mode.I'll bet it was in pull mode. Most trains going northwest out of Union Station have the locomotive at the front, although it might be different on different trains. |

I don't know much about how RR's operate, but I've seen cars and locomotives from all the major RR's at some point operating in the LA area. I assume that it's like the commuter RR's and the freights rent equipment to each other somehow. |

UP's Los Angeles Division is pretty busy - I recall that it sees something like 50 freight trains per day or thereabouts. BNSF San Bernandino Division sees similar traffic too. Neither line has speed control let alone less sophisticated means of enforcing stop signals. |

It is strange. Maybe we just have more cars and potential for collision than most places? I'm pretty sure that we have more cars than anywhere outside of NYC and we're probably close with them. And obviously Metrolink has far too many grade crossings. |

That's my guess too. They've got commuter trains and freight trains going just as fast as most commuter rail does in NYC area - 70-79 mph max - but there's not much to enforce stop signals.Plus, freight roads generally are more lax in their inspections of track than passenger roads. Based on the looks of this crash, they need to install a system to enforce signals given. It's something that's been known at least since the BNSF-Metrorail crash. |

This crash was on a single track right before a tunnel and on a blind curve. They already knew that this would be a good spot for an accident if there were an error.Hopefully perhaps one or more crewmen were able to jump before the crash after putting the train into emergency braking. While engineers are expected to have their trains under control at all times, obviously errors are made. I expect that will be noted in the reports on this collision. |

I was wondering about that. The UP loco looks buried and a bunch of cars behind it derailed. The Metrolink loco rammed back through the first passenger car. Jumping was probably the best bet, but it doesn't look like there were any good options for either crew. |

The way that car looks split open like a tin can, I won't be surpeised if the number gets up to double digits. From the aerial coverage, I couldn't see a Metrolink engine; the UP engines on the freight train were there, and it looked like a UP engine that overturned. Don't know if the train was in push or pull. As bad as this is going to sound, I hope it was in pull, since it will show those folks screaming about how unsafe push is that pull can be bad too. |
