I know - they said it could never happen here and other bull!!! ROTFLMAO! Even worse if you run to catch a train and end up in one of those cars under the new stupid rules you can't move to another car to try to find a seat.Total disregard for passenger comfort - if anything shows that the MTA considers us a nothing more than a herd of cattle this is it! |

The MTA just gave me all the proof I need that the BMT's operation of the subways and attitude towards its customers was much better than the MTA could ever dream of achieving. The BMT offered Bluebirds with mohair upholstered seatings and easy passage between cars. They would have had air conditioning if the technology were available back then... The MTA offers a cattle car without seats and threatens you with arrest and a fine if you accidentally get on that car and try to move to another one with seats... Priceless!!! |

It's probably going to happen on my home subway lines - the 2 and the 5 - because they are among the most crowded subway lines. They'll want to find more ways to squeeze people on if they can. It's bad enough we have selfish people (animals, really) who force more people to stand by sitting with their legs spread way out and put their big-ass bags on the seats, taking up two or even three seats. Now they're going to take the seats out. Ridiculous! |

They took the seats out of the trains at Denver International Airport shortly after it opened. Initially they ran three-car trains even though all the stations were designed to accommodate four-car trains. It wasn't long until an extra set of doors was added at each station and trains were increased to four cars. |

However...the MTA can always say which cars will have the seats available for those who absolutely MUST sit.Meaningless if someone runs for the train and gets in a car without seats and is stuck there because the law prohibits moving between cars. Also ever since they removed the grab handles the bars above the seats are extremely high and uncomfortable. Some people (myself included) suffer excruciating shoulder pain when fully stretching arms. They should lower those bars to a more comfortable level. You will find a lot of people falling over each other or trying to lean on the windows... I would not be surprised if some New Yorkers don't try to break the locks and force the seats down with whatever means necessary.... |

This is a great idea in some respects.I'd roll this out on the Grand Central Shuttle immediately. I would not do it on long lines like the A and F. But this will cost millions to invest in and implement. For example, who's going to lift the seats, locks them, and put them back in the down position after rush hour? Platform personnel? C/R's on WAA? I don't see this happening system-wide, but it could work on the GCS. |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sat Aug 2 17:00:17 2008, in response to Re: SRO coming to a line near you?, posted by LuchAAA on Sat Aug 2 16:31:55 2008. I'd roll this out on the Grand Central Shuttle immediately. It's been tried and failed. NYT Editorial from 26 Jan 1956 Now the Seatless Train We have seen a good many ingenious improvements suggested for the Times Square-Grand Central subway shuttle in our day. But we had not expected to live long enough to hear a transit chairman propose that, for the convenience of the public, all seats be removed from the subway cars. In the old days, of course, the railroad ideal was a seat for every rider. But now, since there are obviously too few seats, the cure is to make them still fewer until there are none. Thus the commonly heard complaint that people are herded into the subway trains like cattle will receive new substantiation; they will ride standing like cattle too. Chairman Patterson of the Transit Authority is the author of this new reform, and he admits he as not yet convinced his fellow-members of the authority. He sees only slight inconvenience to passengers in the two-minute shuttle run. But to the two-minute running time must be added a possible standing and loading time averaging nearly three minutes, in a recent survey, and ranging upward to nearly six minutes maximum. This is standing time not only for the train but also for the passenger. Have the mills of reform, grinding without effect all these years since the atrociously engineered "temporary" shuttles installed in 1918, nothing better than this to deliver to a suffering public? Really, gentlemen, this is absurd. The shuttle has been getting stepchild treatment from the city far too long. It needs a thorough rebuilding and extension, river to river, maybe further. |

Next the MTA will complain that the dwell time at stations has increased due to the extra passengers. So the trains are running slower and they have to add time running time to the schedule. Now it is costing them more to operate service increasing the need for a fare hike. |

However...on lines, such as the Lex, where no more trains can be run...what else can you do?The Lex has been operating at below peak capacity since the 1970's. They used to operate peaks of 32 tph on the express and 30 tph on the local. The current figures are 26 and 24. Reducing the number of trains has also made it more difficult to maintain schedules. One big problem with crush loading is that passengers have to get on and off at stations. There must be well defined corridors within the cars for passengers to reach the doors. Otherwise, any capacity gains derived by packing more passengers per car will be more than offset by fewer trains per hour due to increased dwell times at stations. |

It would perhaps be a rather different case if the dwell times for peak boarding and alighting could be reduced significantly via use of more doors use of both sets of doors simultaneously, one for boarding and the other for alighting. But using R62/A cars and without changing the current procedures on the 42nd St Shuttle, there's not much room for improvement. |

But without running more frequent service or adding more doors per car, it's liable to be a repeat of what goes on with the 6 route now - the trains end up spending too much time at each station along the line. |
