Wrong, i am not on a crusade against technology, i am against useless, and murderous technology, and yes, i do agree, the computer is bad too, especially too much of it. But this false communication i have here can be bad sometimes too. The internet is a good learning tool as well, just have your own opinios and mind as well.Now about the jogging...IT ISN'T exercise. It is a conspiracy by greedy doctors, who want you to pound DA CHIT out of your knees so you have to go to them for knee replacements. Good doctors have told me, and i have read that walking is the best, especialy uphill and upstairs, and jogging is a waste, running is better, if anything, because it isn't as pounding. stop eating mcdonald's, please, cook yourself some wraps, and take them to work, that is the best ides. Don't wear the ipod too much, and when you are outside ytour home, do not wear it at all. Best to just listen to a radio in a car or at home, or go with people to some sort of musical festival. |

Here's an interesting one for you guys: Taxes pay for the operation of FDNY, like they do for fire departments in most large cities. Yet you still get billed for FDNY ambulance service when you use it. However, FDNY does not charge you to put out your house fire (or even a fire in a skyscraper)...that's paid for through tax levies...That's because not putting out house fires has an obvious negative externality: The neighboring buildings could catch fire. There is no such problem with emergency medical care. My house isn't damaged if my neighbor dies. Now, taxes pay for (in subsidies) the operation of NYCT...but New Yorkers pay a higher percentage of NYCT's operating costs in fares than most other US cities...what if, just what if, those billions being spent in Iraq were used to fund (among other things) NYCT's ops so the system was free? (If you can find money to kill people, you can find money to help people...) The two things are completely unrelated. You can make the argument that spending on Iraq should be spent on something else entirely. There is no meaningful connection. That having been said, there is no reason why mass transit should be free. It's not a public good; it's neither non-excludable nor non-rival. If you argue it should be provided for free as a social service, then why not give everyone free food, clothing and shelter. People need those before they need the ability to travel. ...and before SubChatters get up in arms and call me crazy, recall that once upon a time, CUNY was FREE...people got their college educations and the city didn't go broke...taxes paid for it all, and people paid less in taxes then, than today... Except the city did go broke...oops. I find it fascinating that nearly everyone on this board who has argued in favor of free or discounted mass transit has argued for it as a social service instead of as a form of economic capital. |

That was not the causal factor in Bush losing. It was the economy. GDP growth was below 3.2% (this metric has only been correlated to presidential elections) for all of 1992. He lost. The "Read My Lips" speech resonated with the public because of the state of the economy. If the economy was booming, he would have been reelected in a landslide. |

Last night, a 9-term congressman from Utah was defeated in a GOP primary for being insufficiently conservative, although he had a 96% rating from the ACU, which is far higher than that of many colleagues.Comparing electoral results of representatives with executives is like comparing apples and oranges. With Skelos announcing that Bloomberg has dedicated himself to preserving a GOP majority in the state senate, story here, don't expect Bloomberg to be making too many Democrat friends, and expect Assembly Democrats to treat Paterson's cooperation with Bloomberg's risen from the grave congestion pricing scheme as rather traitorous. 1) Bloomberg is no longer a Republican, so I don't see how that is relevant. 2) Assembly Democrats, like most politicians nationwide over the last three decades, are not going to behave like an angry mob. They will persue their own individual interests. If by some miracle it is the case that congestion pricing passes and is enacted, Governor Paterson's head will end up on the chopping block. If you think that people will forget why the percentage of their money owed to the state is higher than it was before Paterson took over the Governorship, then I think that would be a serious error. If congestion pricing passes, and Patterson runs for governor, if New York is experiencing strong economic growth, and crime remains low, he'll be reelected in a landslide. |

The particular issue of the CUNY being tuition-free (student fees, books, and other needs were not free then of course!) and its abolishment in 1976 really had more to do with the city's fiscal crisis; the role of open admissions and the racial politics of that time; the role of the banking industry and their failed investments; President's Ford's and other's disparagement of the New York City for political purposes; middle-class resentment and the demonization of urban life in general; social welfare issues and the break-down of cities nation-wide, and the changing role of the city from an industrial based city to an information and technology based city. In summation, the fact that there was free tuition at the city's colleges - was not something that bankrupted the city! The fact that there was free tuition at the city's colleges was used as a metaphor for New York City's supposed "free spending ways". As I said there has always been a debate over government provided stuff, and what should be "free", and what should the particular users pay for. For example, why should children-less couples pay for the primary-intermediate-secondary educations of children that they did not create? Why should government buy land and use it for parks when that same land could be used for profitable business enterprises that can pay taxes? Why should government "subsidize" the transit fares of small children while their parents and other adults have to pay the full fare? Why not charge folks on how much clean water they use, as well as its delivery and sanitariness? As noted there has always been an argument over the "proper role" of government in promoting and protecting the general welfare of the people. Sometimes with these kinds of questions create some very nasty fist-fights and name-calling - but I hope that does not happen here. Mike |
