Chicago's South Side "L" has come south from Congress ST and a third 90 degree sharp turn puts the tracks over East 63rd ST. Tracks over the street are rare in Chicago. The Columbian Exposition World's Fair lies 1 1/2 miles. The steel structure over the street is three track all the way except for a two track bridge over the Illinois Central RR. The railroad raised its tracks to an elevated right-of-way a year prior, so the "L" was built from the start with run-offs on both sides of the bridge. For some reason photographs of the "L" inside the grounds of the Fair are rare. Equally rare are photos showing the North Shore on 63rd ST.

The most famous of Chicago amusement parks is Riverview on the north side, but the south side had White City at the SW corner of South Park AV and 63rd ST. The last structure on the site was converted into a roller skating rink.

On the opposite corner was the Washington Park race track on a 1/4 sq. mile from South Park to Cottage Grove, 63rd to 61st STs. The name wasn't surprising since the South Parks" Washington Park was just one block further to the north. The race track closed and moved to suburban Homewood, IL, opening the land to apartment construction. This photo shows South Side coaches on the middle track and if you look closely you can see a small piece of the grandstand.

This home-made terminal was the end of the line for decades. You can see the pieces that held the structure that went into the Fair. The train room was actually two wooden coaches. It is said for the first month of the Fair, no stations were finished and "L" patrons walked on the structure from Dorchester station(later name) across the bridge to the Fair.

The bridge that did the Jackson Park branch in is shown during demolition.

Mark's 2008 "L" Charter also stopped at East 63rd, making a rare appearance for the Budd 2200s.

You are welcome. I split the original post up figuring maybe that was better for some.

Credit the black n whites to my collection of CTA staff photos. Most of them came from George himself.
