According to that test my connection sucks, but I get vastly different results depending on where I ping.    Even the long distance stuff is wierd:   The only real lesson I can get from this is that the network topography of the Northeast is a mess and that for me to reach a testing site I probably have to pass through too many switches. I can ping Drexel and get 6mb/s, but pinging Fredrick, New York, or Clifton drops me below 3mb/s. |

The closest tests to me are in NYC or DC, that's not a problem. The time needed for a signal to travel over a 100-200 mile phone line is insignificant when compared to the time required for it to pass through the switching equipment, and that's what the test measures. Your ping times are likely on the order of 30 to 500 milliseconds depending on the connection, while the time for a signal to travel through a 200 mile wire should be roughly 1 millisecond. Consider yourself lucky the closest test site is in DC, I'd imagine that's around 50-60 miles from you. SpeedTest tells me to use NYC's test site, even though it's around 100 miles from here. |
