The first photo of the thread showed the draft gear down about 8 inches (shear pins) and the end bonnet crushed. The #2 end link bar picture shows a sheared radial bar and one bolster off the truck. Since no one has posted a picture of the first two cars, the T/O had to slam into more than just the bumper (maybe also the wall) to total (or as the news reports stated - sustain significant damage) to the first two cars and put a dent in the third car, Was the train still taking power (accelerating) after the T/O hit the bumper. Unlike the Canarsie yard incident, the train did not jump the bumper and did not derail! |

I don't think the car body was badly damaged, but the underside of the car was. So were the coupler, angle cocks and other underbody equipment. One photo I saw had a truck actually lifted off the car body. |
