JUst read a few days ago in the METRO newspaper that the Smith 9th St station will be closing for a year, that's right, for a year as part of the Culver Viaduct project & station rehabilitation which will mean that both local tracks will be taken out of service, in addition, temporary platforms will be built up at 4th Av.

I assume that hardrail connection will be built south of Carroll St to switch from local to express tracks, only the G train would be able to stop at 4th Av & both F & G train would operate express between 7th Av & Church Av, I don't understand on why any of this is mentioned.

I fail to understand your second paragraph. If your ASSumption is correct with the hard rail connection, explain to me why the G can stop at Fourth Ave, and not the F? Wouldn't they already be on the same track? Plus you CAN have local service between 7th Ave. and Church Ave.: 2 exclusive use shuttle trains running in both directions on the same track under absolute block rules which simply means one train is allowed within a specified section of trackage. The trains can run in service in the normal direction of traffic and run lite in the wrong rail direction so as to not confuse the geese. Stuff isn't mentioned in newspapers because they do not understand transit issues as well as transit professionals and some of us involved in the hobby.

OR make a hard rail connection back to the local tracks on the other side of 4th Ave.

My guess is they'll run all service express in one direction for a while, then reverse it.

How extensive a repair/rebuild is going to get done? Is it possible to just replace the concrete (i.e. re-clad the undelying steel)?, or will the entire structure be replaced?

Does anyone know the projected cost?

While I don't know where they are going to put the temp platforms up, that doesn't seem easy. The tunnel starts right there.

Here's the full story:

LOWER MANHATTAN. F train riders in Brooklyn, get ready for more bad news.
The Smith-9th Street station — the local stop for thousands of Red Hook and Gowanus residents — will be closed for up to 12 months while repair work is made on the crumbling Culver Viaduct, which stretches over the Gowanus Canal.
NYC Transit could give no specific dates for the closures because the contract has not yet been awarded. Rough estimates, based on a previously stated 2012 deadline for the end of the project, suggest that Smith-9th could be shuttered for most of 2010, after 15 months of work on switches and tracks.
The work will also force riders at the 4th Avenue station onto temporary platforms.
“The bottom line is quite simple: The infrastructure work and system upgrades that comprise this project are necessary for the continued and future safe operation of the current F and G service,” said NYC Transit spokesperson Paul Fleuranges.
According to NYC Transit’s Connie Crawford, the Red Hook community has been consulted.
“We’ve talked to the community about that — they’re well aware,” Crawford told an MTA committee on Monday. “This is major, major work at that station.”
But according to the local community board, the authority has not met with residents for two years.
“We’ve jumped a step somewhere. We might have been blazed over,” said Community Board 6 District Manager Craig Hammerman. He added that attempts to reach transit officials have had no success yet.
“It would be an outrageous inconvenience,” he said, while acknowledging the project’s goals were positive.
There is another silver lining: The G will be extended to Church Avenue throughout the project, and one express track will be rehabilitated — potentially opening the door to a permanent F express in years to come.

The station would presumably be still open and train will still stop there while all the rehad work is taking place.

Since the railroad goes underground immediately south of Fourth Ave. station, don't think that's an option. In other words, there is no opening.

Obviously everything below track level must also be overhauled, which includes the fare control area and all accesses leading to it. Doing it while keeping the station/fare control area open would dramatically increase the cost and time involved. The geese can take a shuttle bus just like everybody else whose station got renovated.

Ilove Hammerman's whining. I agree that communicating with the neighborhood is important, and more likely as not what Hammerman is saying is that MTA didn't kiss his feet while it was doing so.

Whatever communication there was or wasn't, it doesn't change the fact that the viaduct needs a rebuild. Yes, it will be painful. But it also means that in 2012, you'll have a smooth fast ride plus express service and probably a nicely updated Smith-9th Station (plus other stations).

My attitude is get it done ASAP, which means funding in place and skilled crews scheduled.

They will do it if enough people are asking for it. I think ridership has increased to the point where eadding express service is appropriate, but we'll see what MTA decides. I imagine that the decision would be made a year in advance (ie 2011) because of the schedule changes, rolling stock assignments, the union "pick" to operate the trains, and so on.

Right. The question was rhetorical for the purpose of responding to the post I responded to which made it seem as though the return of express service were guaranteed: "But it also means that in 2012, you'll have a smooth fast ride plus express service and probably a nicely updated Smith-9th Station (plus other stations)."

I hope there is a way to put in an elevator or two at least part of the way between the F and R transfer. That's a whole lotta steps!

Hopefully, since this would be the right time for that sort of renovation. These sort of grand renewals/reconstructions are just the right occasion on which to reconsider what can be revised from the past.

On the Flushing Line, when it was being reconstructed/renovated, I always wondered why 74th St-Broadway wasn't made into an express station, and Junction Blvd into a local station.
