Another near-miss for track workers; train runs red signal |
|
Posted by RonInBayside on Tue Sep 18 09:13:25 2007 Track workers almost run over when the train ran a stop signal; tripper saves a man's life.Somebody (more than one?) may need to be disciplined here. Running a red is a very serious offense. Link here |

He ran a Red flag or latern and hit the portable trip used by the work gang. Thats is one of the most serious offense in transit. |

I read about the flag but I thought the wayside signal was red (ie it was dumb luck that the train hit a red signal before killing somebody).Thank you for descrivbing the portable trip. I'd say that's a useful device! How do you pass one? Do you stop, and then the track worker disables it and waves you by at 2 mph? |

The set is when work is being done on the track one person is a flagman. He has a device on the proper side of the track where he/she places a Portable trip in the up position with a red flag or hold the red flag across the track. The T/O is suppose to stop one car lenght from the flagman. When everyone is clear the flagman hides the red and removes the trip and gives the T/O a proceed signal. The T/O then proceeds no faster then 10 MPH. There are many time and still to this day track workers set up improper flagging where the T/O may not have enough time to react to get the train under control. Now in that case the T/O is to report that situation to the Rail Control center and a TSS will investigate. |

In due time, we'll hear something Mike. For now, it's not the time for us to know. For all we know, the investigation is still on so the "hush-hush" rule for us rail nutz is still in effect.Lord Vader |

Good thing the trip arm was in place!!I witnessesd a train slide on wet rails at an outdoor station. Slid right through the trip arm and came to a stop 10-15 feet in front of the gang hauling buckets of concrete up from the street. I think each of the gang crew lost 10 pounds right there. |
