Lefferts Boulevard (S) Shuttle |
|
Posted by G1Ravage on Sun Sep 9 02:35:30 2007 I happened to be at Ozone Park - Lefferts Boulevard the other night while they were cutting trains for the late-night shuttle service.I noticed that the train displayed a yellow (S) on its end. Is this normal for that shuttle, because it's the only (S) available on the R-44? Or did this T/O in particular just not care to look for any other (S)'s? |

The yellow (S) is is the sign they use every midnight. I'm sure if the line super wanted a different color used, it would have been mandated long ago. Perhaps the yellow (S) is closer in the roll sign to the A than the black and white (S)? |

Thats what I heard too, even though they don't meet up with each other unless theres some type of cold weather plan. like the one we had a few years ago when they ran 8 cars on the Rock Park Shuttle to Euclid |

The electronic side signs say where the train is going. It's no different from having the two separate (A) services: one to Ozone Park, and one to Far Rockaway. Both have the same blue (A), and both are only distinguishable from the other by what its destination signs read. Plus, the two shuttles usually never meet up. I'm gonna go with what Bill says in that the yellow (S) is closer to the blue (A) than the grey (S) is. But isn't there a blue (S) as well? The maps used to show the Rockaway Park (S) as being blue. |

There have been many iterations of Rockaway service over the years. I was born in Far Rock, spent my childhood in Far rock, and I moved back to the Far Rock last year when I had a chance to snap up one of the many new apartments being built here. Of course, in the '60s and '70s, the A train was the sole province of R-10s. I remember riding the HH shuttle (R-1/9s, the E train to Far Rock (R-1/9s, later R-40 Slants), then in the late 70s the CC local did the Rock Park service (R-10s). The shuttles to Rock Park became more interesting in the late '70s and during the '80s. There was a blue H train (although I don't recall ever seeing a blue H end sign, it was blue on the map), and there was the late night Rockaway Round Robin with its circuitous route covering the entire peninsula. AFAIK, there was never a blue S end sign used on equipment assigned to Rockaway.Nowadays, though, rush hour drives me crazy. There are three different A services, (Far Rock, Lefferts, Rock Park) and if you are trying to get to Far Rock from, say, Broadway Nassau, you might have to wait through four trains (A-Rock Park, C, A-Lefferts, C) before the train that goes to Far Rock arrives...plus the Rock Park shuttle is a full time service, so it runs even during the rush... |

I'm pretty sure the 44 rollsigns have a blue, grey, orange and yellow S. It OBVIOUSLY has a grey one since that's what the Rockaway Shuttle uses. It was yellow the one time I rode it back in 2005.The 2002-04 Grand St Shuttle also used the yellow S. |

They keep the shuttle running because all of the 's are put-ins or layups at the B116 yard, so only the shuttle can provide service in the opposite direction, but customers are getting HALF the usual slots during that time. I experienced this effect during one of my ultimate rides, which is why I now swear by starting these trips at B116 to kill off the Rockaways in half the time. |

OTOH, I could only find one pic on nycsubway.org showing a blue S (with another train showing a gray S). I guess it wasn't common but I rarely ventured past Howard Beach in the mid to late nineties so I'm not sure. |

Yes there are blue (S) why they aren't used is another question. And I had no idea the yellow S was for the Lefferts segment and just a color used for the Broadway line. |

Sort of brings it back to its BMT roots. :) Broadway (Yellow) is about the most difficult physical connection from Lefferts though. You once could get a train there from Broadway (Brown), though - years before the colors came into use. |

Yes there are blue (S) why they aren't used is another question. And I had no idea the yellow S was for the Lefferts segment and just a color used for the Broadway line. The blue S is only available on the newer signs. Also, the yellow S is not expressly (or shuttlely if you wish) used for the Lefferts Shuttle. The only reason why it is used is because it is the first S that is encountered when rolling the end sign. If the grey S was closer to the A than the yellow S, then the grey sign would be used. |

I been out in Far Rock all my life and remember seeing the blue (H) in the early 90s. After that the gray (S) was used. I seen (H)s pop up during GOs like the one when trains ran between Mott and Howard Beach over 10 yrs ago. The last time I've been on an (H) train was in '98 headed towards Euclid on an R32 or R38. It was when summer time shuttles ran between Rock Park and Euclid. |

The map used to have a blue (S) but it was rarely used. Sometimes the TOs move the rollsign to other color (S)s instead of gray, they even use "Shuttle", but for some reason I never seen a blue (S) on the regular Rock Park shuttle. |
