No, the teal-and-white racing stripe scheme used from 1966 to 1968, very similar to the original paint job on the WF R-36s. It's my personal favorite.

In the real world Pelham 123 would not normally go to South Ferry. It would of course go through the City Hall loop after terminating at Brooklyn Bridge. Late at night after the 5 stopped running, the 6 did cross over to the express tracks at Brooklyn Bridge and ran through to South Ferry stopping at the 1 (outer) platform. I am not sure when this service pattern ended but I would guess around 1980.

The movie was filmed in 1974. While the service pattern might not normally have taken Pelham 1-2-3 to South Ferry, the route and events depicted in the book and movie were very plausible and the TA could have routed a train in that manner for any number of valid reasons (and could still do it today). Since this is fiction, at the very worst the screen writer need only imagine some "GO" in effect.

My point is that this detail hardly requires the kind of "suspension of disbelief" you have to accept with many thriller movies.

It was actually a lie that the TA did not render any assistance. Don Harold was assigned full time for six months to supervise and watch the crew on Authority property. He told me this himself just after the movie was completed. Guess they were covering themselves against potential lawsuits if a train were to be hijacked.

No, they were not afraid of a "hijack." The TA assigned personnel to supervise filming because the TA wanted to make sure filming was done safely, adhered to a contractual schedule and did not disrupt subway service. Also, the agency wanted to make sure TA facilities and equipment were used correctly.

There is no doubt that the producers took out liability insurance and indemnified the TA ("hold the TA harmless") against any damage, disruption, injuries, complaints or lawsuits that might have occurred in connection with filming.

At one point, a person is heard saying the local doesn't run to South Ferry at this time of day. Pelham 123 (or 1323) would be created by having a Pelham 103 (or 1303) and 5 minute headways. Pelham 123 would become something like Brooklyn Bridge 214 (or 1414).

Thank you.

The TA was making clear that the agency did not instruct the production company on how to hijack a subway train. That's more of a legal consideration than anything else. After the movie aired, if a crime victim were to sue the TA on the grounds the agency were reckless in showing a crook "how to do" something, the TA could point to the disclaimer.

With tens of thousands of employees, ex-employees and retirees who know how to run a train, "cut" a train, and have been through the tunnels, it would be impossible to keep them all from describing what they know to a crook. It's not something the TA can worry about, because there's no point to worrying about it. But the TA can and does worry about lawsuits.

By the way, the TA did render some technical assistance. The agency didn't provide a hijack manual but they provided equipment, station platforms, electrically live tracks and personnel who monitored the safety of the production crew and told them what they could do, when they could do it and when they could not do it.

I had a license from the TA in the mid 1980s to produce an officially sanctioned computer game in the 1980s. It was programmed in GFA Basic and later in C on the Atari ST and IBM PC (DOS 6.0) The TA, in its contract, said I could not depict violence on the subway system. I reminded the attorney at 347 Madison Av about Pelham 1-2-3. The reply was "We don't intend to make a movie like that again on TA property. Inote that Money Train was filmed in Los Angeles, not New York.

Actually, the TA went out of their way to assist the production company on "how to hijack a subway train" by deliberately showing methods that couldn't possibly work. So I doubt even this would have been useful as the movie depcited a completely useless way of going about it.

You're right though, anyone who's ever done it knows PRECISELY how it could have worked out successfully but you won't hear it from ME either. :)

Once again, I've got no argument with anything you've said here. It is all correct. However, my original point was that the TA was worried about a train being hijacked as a result of this movie, and I still believe that is the case. And yes, they wanted to protect themselves legally, in case someone did try. They did render technical assistance, as you also point out, which makes the disclaimer untrue.

I think the credits could have been more accurately worded as follows: We thank the New York City Transit Authority for allowing parts of the film to be made on their property and for the equipment they provided. However they did not provide technical assistance...

The credits as written provide a disservice to the TA by making it seem as if it was made against their will and without them supervising any of the action. We will never see another movie like the original Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, or negative closing credits again.
