NYC's Redbirds weren't entirely red either.

Actually the lawsuit and New Jersey's asbestos fears may be from something else earlier.

When PATH retired the H&M K-cars by 1989, some were sold to SEPTA as parts for the Market-Frankford M-3s. SEPTA then donated the cars to New Jersey as reef and they were placed off Sea Girt, NJ in 1990.

By 2000, the condition of these cars had deterioated so much that environmental remeditation was considered. As a result the state was reconsidering the use of railway cars in reefs.

Yeah, I just remembered that too. I remember seeing some of the pictures taken of the cars...or what was left of them, I should say...and they just deteriorated. I think those were aired on WNBC a few years back when the last 50 Redbird cars were reefed.

Then again I remember that same report showing some Redbirds that were dumped several months earlier (probably the first ones dumped 6 years ago)and they seemed to hold up fine, maybe even better than the SEPTA cars.

The Redbirds in Delaware and South Carolina "have been teeming with sea life" and continued to be structually sound and intact, unlike the K-cars at Sea Girt. Despite these statements from Delaware and South Carolina officials, the NJ DEP continued to be skecptical on the Redbirds.

For some recent photos of the K-cars, see the NJScuba.net page.

As I remember one guy telling me long ago, "so much hullabaloo over something that should've really been nothing." The cars could've been dumped somewhere else if NJ didn't want them.

Anything new to report on the Redbird pair destined to go to IRM?

Actually, no, I haven't heard anything about the cars for a long time now. Last I heard they were near a warehouse in Queens for a movie shoot. In fact IIRC the movie company was supposed to pay for the transport of the cars to IRM. But I think they're still in good hands.
