I'm honestly not sure what they're used for these days, but if they're white, you're OK, and if they're red, you're not. Most of them seem to be found at entrances to river tunnels and the like. Here are some more shots, taken July 30, 2006: |

Since there are no xovers until the end of the line, the inbound track could be used for a single track shuttle to the end of the line at Metropolitan Ave. The bottom signal may indicate the status of the xover at Metropolitan Ave. |

Has nobody read the signals page at nycsubway.org?The signal in question is called a train order signal. If the white lights are showing, there are no orders, and the train can proceed normally. If the red lights are showing, the train should stop and stay, and the T/O should phone the number or location indicated (in this case, the Control Center) to receive orders. |

More likely, it's there to prevent any single track shuttle from advancing farther. In David's pictures, you see the lower red aspect lit, meaning you are under no circumstances to proceed past it. |

An interestin aspect of train order signals is that they have no retaining circuits. This means that if the controlling tower throws the train order signal while a train is passing it, the train will be tripped on other than an operating car. The reason for that is that, should an emergency occur which requires all service entering the area to be stopped immediately, there will be less likelihood of a passenger train being sent into an area where it would be dangerous such as a smoke condition. |
