I'm the LAST person who should be attempting to explain this, but the phenomena you're describing has to do with the camera, not the end sign. The end signs on the R-160s have a "refresh rate" that's too slow for most cameras. Or too fast, I forget which. What happens is, when you take a picture with your camera using a short exposure, the end sign's circle will appear "incomplete". But, if you take a picture using a longer exposure, the sign will appear complete. The effect is completely unnoticeable to the naked eye. A similar effect occurs when taking a picture of the end sign of a Bombardier R-142, except it occurs with the route number, and not the circle. |

To be a little more specific: The LED lights in the sign blink on and off. The blink rate is too fast to be seen, but when you take a photo with an extremely short exposure time, the camera will catch some of the lights off and the sign will appear incomplete. If you're taking pictures underground, you're probably using a longer exposure time, and can catch all of the lights on, resulting in a full sign. |
